Microstructures and tensile properties of a high-pressure die-cast Mg-4Al-2RE-2Ca based alloy were thoroughly investigated. The results indicate that the combinative addition of Ca and RE has a good cell refinement effect and can clearly change the intermetallic constituents. In the studied alloy, the intermetallic phases mainly consist of (Mg,Al)2Ca, Al11RE3, Al8RE3, Al2.12RE0.88, and Al10RE2Mn7, wherein the Al11RE3 phase has fully disparate morphologies from the conventional one in the Mg-Al-RE based alloys, the Al8RE3 phase is an unknown phase, and the Al2.12RE0.88 phase contains twins and numerous staking faults. However, the Al2RE phase is absent in the studied alloy. On the other hand, substituting half RE with Ca can also obviously further improve the tensile strength at both room temperature and high temperatures, but will also result in low plasticity simultaneously at lower temperatures (≤ 200 °C), to which the key is the highly interconnected and strong intermetallic skeleton. © 2015 Elsevier Inc.

In order to adapt to the trend of "energy saving and emission reduction" and impel the practical application of semi solid processing (SSP) in China, the progress and application of semi-solid theory in China have been reviewed briefly and systematically. It was emphasized on basic theories, such as formation of globular grains, rheology, high pressure solidification and plastic deformation and applications, such as material design, preparation of semi-solid billets (slurries), thixoforming and application status, which are based on the advantage of semi-solid processing. The results show that the gap of SSP between world level and China exists, especially in application technologies, including market recognition, application fields exploiting, developing of billets (slurries) preparation technologies with low cost and special equipments. The prospect of semi-solid forming development path in China is presented. And we hope that application of SSP has great new breakthrough and development and China will be changed from a large metal processing country to a powerful metal processing country. © 2010 The Nonferrous Metals Society of China.

Tezhong Zhuzao Ji Youse Hejin/Special Casting and Nonferrous Alloys | Year: 2016

Effects of Sm content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of gravity casting and die casting ADC12 alloy were investigated by metallographic analysis, liquidity and tensile testing. The results show that with the increase of Sm content, microstructure is refined firstly and then coarsened, and alloy liquidity is increased at first and then decreased. Compared with those of ADC12 alloy without Sm, Si phase can be refined with more spheroidization, and the fluidity of the alloy with 1.0% Sm addition is improved by 17.8%. In the die casting, compared with the ADC12 alloy, microstructure of 1.0% Sm alloy can be ignored in change, however, liquidity, tensile strength, yield strength and elongation are increased by 1.5%, 8.1%, 6.9% and 13.0%, respectively. © 2016, Journal Office of Special Casting and Nonferrous Alloys. Tezhong Zhuzao Ji Youse Hejin/Special Casting and Nonferrous Alloys | Year: 2015

Chemical composition, thermal diffusion coefficient and density of Mg-RE series, AZ91D and ADC12 alloy were measured at ambient temperature, meanwhile, the specific thermal capacity and thermal conductivity of the alloys were calculated based on the NKR standard. The results reveal that regardless of room temperature or high temperature, the Mg-RE alloy exhibits satisfied tensile properties. At 250℃, the tensile strength, thermal conductivity and thermal capacity of Mg-RE alloy reach 154 MPa, 101 W/(m·K)and 1.778 J/(cm3·K), increased by 71%, 40% and decreased by 7.0%, respectively, compared with those of AZ91D alloy. During temperature measuring process, the increment-temperature and decrement-temperature rate are the fastest, and heat transferring during balance process is the most, showing desirable dissipation ability of Mg-RE alloy. ©, 2015, Journal Office of Special Casting and Nonferrous Alloys.
