The risk of spreading of alien species to protected forest habitats through recreational horse-back riding was experimentally investigated at Oulanka National Park, north-eastern Finland during 2002-2005. Levels of disturbance, horse manure and seed rain of dwarf shrubs were manipulated in genuine boreal forest habitat. Specifically we asked (i) whether the seeds of alien species can be dispersed to natural forests by horse manure and (ii) whether disturbance in soils and vegetation increases the density of alien species and decrease the density of native species. Manure addition introduced seeds of graminoid and forb species, which were absent elsewhere in the study area. Establishment of the alien species was further enhanced by the disturbance treatment. Germination of natural shrub species was enhanced by disturbance treatment, whereas manure addition had little impact on the native shrubs. The results indicate that alien species may be introduced to natural forests through recreational horse riding, if horses are fed by hay that contains germinable seeds. Soil disturbance enhances the germination of seeds. In practice, the risk of alien species to the biodiversity of natural forests may be relatively small due to the lack of continuous disturbance in these habitats. Instead, the greatest risk is caused by the possibility of alien species to spread via trails to neighbouring, extremely sensitive open habitats. © 2009 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Introduction of second-generation biofuels is an essential factor for meeting the EU's 2020 targets for renewable energy in the transport sector and enabling the more ambitious targets for 2030. Finland's forest industry is strongly involved in the development and commercializing of second-generation biofuel production technologies. The goal of this paper is to provide a quantified insight into Finnish prospects for reaching the 2020 national renewable energy targets and concurrently becoming a large-scale producer of forest-biomass-based second-generation biofuels feeding the increasing demand in European markets. The focus of the paper is on assessing the potential for utilizing forest biomass for liquid biofuels up to 2020. In addition, technological issues related to the production of second-generation biofuels were reviewed. Finland has good opportunities to realize a scenario to meet 2020 renewable energy targets and for large-scale production of wood-based biofuels. In 2020, biofuel production from domestic forest biomass in Finland may reach nearly a million ton (40 PJ). With the existing biofuel production capacity (20 PJ/yr) and the national biofuel consumption target (25 PJ) taken into account, the potential net export of biofuels from Finland in 2020 would be 35 PJ, corresponding to 2-3% of European demand. Commercialization of second-generation biofuel production technologies, high utilization of the sustainable harvesting potential of Finnish forest biomass, and allocation of a significant proportion of the pulpwood harvesting potential for energy purposes are prerequisites for this scenario. Large-scale import of raw biomass would enable remarkably greater biofuel production than is described in this paper. © 2011 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Play Assessment for Group Settings (PAGS) was originally designed to measure the play ability of 2- to 8-year-old children in their natural day-care context and for the use of different professionals. The main purpose of this study was to examine the inter-rater reliability of the PAGS. Twelve raters from different professional backgrounds scored a total of 78 children, both videotaped co-scored cases and individual live cases. The many-faceted Rasch model (MFR) was used to examine the goodness-of-fit of the rater severity estimates. Of the 12 raters, 91.7% were demonstrated to fit the MFR model expectations. Overall the results of this study indicated that the raters scored the PAGS in a reliable way, and that they behaved like independent experts. The separation index (2.09) of the raters indicated that the inter-rater scorings were comparable with each other for practical purposes. Further research on the different response processes of children in different diagnostic groups is needed. © 2011 Informa Healthcare.

A survey instrument has been designed to capture basic demographics of the unit of observation - an individual living lab (LL) and to study the relationships between: 1. perceived LL Innovation Capability 2. perceived LL Entrepreneurial Orientation, 3. perceived LL Business Performance. This paper focuses on reducing the number of items across all the dimensions of the survey instrument by using unweighted least squares ULS solution. A total reduction of items from 109 to 65 across the entire survey instrument has been achieved. A link to an online survey has been sent to ∼320 Living Lab managers within the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL). Roughly 10% of responses from the entire population have been obtained through the process. On average, living labs are fairly opened and user centred innovation ecosystems characterised by strong, yet surprisingly risk-averse innovation cultures with rather flat management structures, relatively low internal and external competitive pressures, lack of sufficient resources for further development and relatively low scores related to perceived performance. © 2013 IEEE.
