The opinion that fatigue failure of the cover attachment to the turbine in the No. 2 generating set at the Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP occurred as a result of its operation with a temporary impeller, which had experienced acute hydraulic imbalance duringthe start-up period, is widely adopted among water-power engineers. Different approaches to problems associated with evaluation of the strength and service life of hydraulic turbines with service lives exceeding the period assigned by the manufacturer are compared. Significant differences in approaches to strength evaluation in the design, construction, and modernization stages, and during an extension in service life are cited.
