At the end of the 2000s the companies of the electric power system of the Russian Federation attempted to make a systematic estimate of the various measures for limiting short-circuit currents in the Moscow power system. The result of this assessment was a number of publications by different scientific-research institutes, including a conceptual investigation, carried out by the JSC “Institute “Energosetproject” and with the participation of specialists of JSC “Systems Operator of the United Power System,” on the development of strategic ways of developing the Moscow Power System, taking into account the increase in the level of short-circuit currents. From the results of these investigations, possible ways of developing the Moscow Power System were determined depending on the problems involved in limiting short-circuit currents, by taking the necessary measures and determining the points where current-limiting devices should be connected. This paper reflects the practical conclusions reached by companies of the electric power industry, operating in the Moscow Region, regarding the results of these investigations, namely, the measures used during 2011 – 2014 are analyzed, as well as promising measures for limiting short-circuit currents, together with further possible ways of achieving short-circuit current limitation in the Moscow Power System. © 2015 Springer Science+Business Media New York

A device for the automatic limiting of line overload is considered. The device determines the thermal overload of the line from the current in the line and the temperature of the surrounding air, and takes controlling action to shed its load. It has a unified algorithm, suitable for cable, overhead and cable-overhead lines. The theoretical and practical aspects of the operation of the device are described. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

This is the first paper is a series of publications on our experience in the construction and renovation of 110 - 500 kV overhead transmission lines in the northern regions of West Siberia. The paper addresses problems related to the pile foundations of transmission towers erected on thawed or permafrost soil. The mechanisms of foundation-soil interaction, causes of accidents, and preventive measures are analyzed. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

A method of limiting the short-circuit current in the circuit breaker of a damaged connection by shunting a section of the busbars to which it is connected is proposed. Software and hardware systems are developed which rapidly reveal dangerous short-circuit currents and issue commands to engage a shunting device. A high-voltage high-speed switch is developed based on controlled vacuum dischargers, which closes the circuit in not longer than 0.1 msec. The high speed of response of the system enables the impulse current to be redistributed between the damaged connector and the shunting device. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

This is an overview of work by the firm Energosetproject on the introduction of synchronized vector measurement technologies and the development of a system for transient monitoring in the unified power system of Russia. Work on the creation of a system for stability monitoring in the northern part of Tyumen Region, and transient monitoring systems in the unified power systems of the Urals and Siberia is reported. Problems with data transfer and the architecture of communication channels in these projects are examined. Possible advantages of introducing transient monitoring systems in the unified power system of Russia are pointed out. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media New York.
