Problems during filling of the reservoir under frozen rock bed conditions and rock-fill dam body are examined. Thawing of the dam bed and body resulted in an incline in the direction of the upper pool, which in turn caused local opening of the joint between the concrete dam and the asphalt-concrete water wall, which is the water-impermeable core of the dam. © 2016 Springer Science+Business Media New York

The pattern of deformations of the Sayano-Shushenskaya arch-gravity dam with its reservoir filled and at a stagnant volume was examined. investigations revealed that a distinguishing characteristic of arch and arch-gravity dams was the three-dimensional character of their deformations, which was caused by a combination of cantilever and arch effects. The sequence employed to calculate the angles of incline of the horizontal sections of the dam to the horizontals involved an increment of horizontal displacement dx of the dam, which occurred for each height increment dy of the dam. The angles of incline of the horizontal sections of the dam permitting identification of the interrelation between the arch and cantilever deformations, represented an extremely important diagnostic parameter in addition to radial, tangential, and vertical displacements that made it possible to ascertain this character.

Problems that can be resolved with use of ground laser scanning are listed. Aproposed procedure for a control survey with use of the method of laser scanning is described in detail. Advantages of laser scanning for updating of control documentation are noted. Basic steps in studies related to the control survey are described.
