The problem of diagnostics of the elements of a phased array antenna (PAA) with interacting PAA elements with the use of signals reflected from radiator-free space junctions is considered. Methods for design of experiments and processing of the measured data that increase the reliability of PAA diagnostics are proposed for arrays in which mutual coupling of PAA elements cannot be disregarded. Experimental data confirming the adequacy of derived mathematical expressions to the studied PAA and the efficiency of proposed processing methods are obtained. © 2013 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd. Operation of a monopulse meter of the objects' angular coordinates under the multipath propagation conditions during tracking of the objects located at small elevation angles above the underlying surface, the so-called low-altitude targets (LATs), is analyzed. A method for measuring the LAT angular coordinates, which is based on separation of the aperture plane of the meter's antenna system into four identical subaper-tures (partial channels of the meter) so that the phase centers of these subapertures are located pairwise symmetrically in the horizontal and vertical planes and are arranged into a rhombic structure, is proposed. Combinations of the output signals of these subapertures used for formation of the meter's discriminator curves (DCs) are analyzed. Relationships that are used in construction of the operation algorithm of the beam handling system in tracking of a LAT and ensure independence of the DC shape on the characteristics of the underlying surface are derived. An algorithm for determination of the LAT coordinates is described and the results of simulation of the meter operation are presented. © Pleiades Publishing, Inc., 2012. Source

A method for the control of the transmission coefficients of antenna elements of a system comprising an active phased array antenna (APAA) and a dome lens, which ensures formation of a deep boresight null of the elevation difference pattern, is proposed. The effect of the control method on the characteristics of receiving monopulse channels of the APAA depending on the intrinsic noise of antenna elements is analyzed. The results of the well-known theory of reception of a nonplane wave by an antenna with continuous aperture are extended to the case of an array antenna. © Pleiades Publishing, Inc., 2012. Source
