According to the present operation of UPS in electric railway, sum up the three key problems existing in its application as follows. First, UPS performing a self-test automatically is unable to absolutely detect the failure battery. Second, in electrified railway, UPS battery keeps in the floating charge state for a long time, which reduces battery lifetime. Third, discharge time of battery is determined on the basis of battery capacity. The accurate measurement of battery capacity is getting more and more important to avoid deep discharge. However, with complex chemical properties of battery, to achieve accurate measurement of battery capacity is impossible at present. So, to solve the three problems above, an experiment has been conducted and a system has been designed on the basis of experimental data. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

In order to decrease the production costs of Inconel 718 alloy, two kinds of test programs were designed including conventional program and economical program. The conventional program was designed to smelt Inconel 718 alloy with elemental metal. The economical program was designed to smelt Inconel 718 alloy with Nb-Fe and Cr-Fe instead of metal Nb and Cr. Two heats of 718 alloy were smelted separately by two kinds of test programs in vacuum induction furnace, molten alloy were casted to two ingots. Under the same processing parameter, two ingots were carried out diffusion annealing, roll forming and heat treatment. Specimens were taken to analyze the mechanical properties and metallurgical structure. The testing results show Inconel 718 alloy by both kinds of test programs can reach domestic technical standard of superior alloy. Compared with conventional program, economical program of using Nb-Fe and Cr-Fe instead of metal Nb and Cr can decrease 18% costs of the raw material.

The high radiative coating technology was used in the coke oven 5 in Jiuquan Steel Co., The comparison test were conducted under different conditions in between the coke oven with and without coating. The results show that the heat transfer efficiency was increased 6.35% in coke oven 5, and the central temperature of coke cake increases 14°C, the flue gas temperature decreases 23°C and saves coke oven gas 420.48 × 104 m3/a and the energy saving rate is 3.32%. The effective thermal efficiency of coke oven is increased 1.99%. The energy consumption for the coking process decreases 81.8kJ/kg coal(with 7%H2O), and CO2 emissions reduces 132.5 × 104 m3/a. Obvious economic and social benefits can be obtained.

The furnace temperature control plays an important role in the rolling process, it affects the quality of steel and energy consumption directly. It is clear that furnace temperature change is multivariable, nonlinear, coupling, great inertia and pure lag and the complex industrial process of furnace control should be optimized. In this paper, a intelligent temperature control system was designed which has a two-layer structure includes optimizing and controlling. The control system is successfully applied to a steel company in medium plate product processes, and achieved good effects. The controllability can be applied to similar industrial furnaces, and has a wide application prospect. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The defects of transverse coating ripple and longitude coating ripple on the hot-dip galvalume coating produced by thin slab continous casting-rolling process were analyzed by using OM and SEM-EDS. Comprehensively, air knife-pressure, gap of air knife, angle of air knife, the temperature of zinc liquid, the temperature of steel strip in zinc pot are the main reasons of coating ripple on the galvalume coating. Longitude coating ripple is caused by lower air knife pressure and higher temperature of zinc liquid. Higher air knife pressure and wider gap of air knife lead to transverse coating ripple. The homogeneity coating thickness, spangles and shine can be achieved by means of controlling the process parameters to ensure the shake of strip steel under 3 mm at certain temperatre.

The inclusions in the steel samples taken at different stages of AOD-LF-CC process during 409 L stainless steelmaking and casting were observed by a scanning electron microscope with an EDS X-ray analyzer. The types of inclusions from different stages of the process were analyzed and identified. The inclusions in AOD were mainly CaO-SiO 2-Al 2O 3-MgO compounds, while in LF, it was detected mainly MgO-Al 2O 3-TiO x inclusions. Both MgO-Al 2O 3-TiO x and TiN inclusions were found in tundish. The origin of the inclusions formed at different stages was also discussed.

X120 pipeline steel was trial-produced at a laboratory and the continuous cooling transformation (CCT) curves of it were drawn. The results indicate that the steel as-rolled has average yield strength of 905 MPa, average tensile strength of 980 MPa, average elongation of 17%, Rp0.2/Rm of 0.92 and average impact energy of 90J at - 20 °C. After tempered for 2 h at 600°C, the steel has average yield strength of 950MPa, average tensile strength of 1000MPa, average elongation of 18%, Rp0.2/Rm of 0.95 and average impact energy of 95 J at - 20°C. After compression, the microstructure of the steel cooled at 5°C/s is lath bainite which is ideal microstructure of X120 pipeline steel.

Samples taken from the end of AOD, LF and tundish casting operations of the AOD-LF-TD process during 430 stainless smelting process were investigated and identified through the scanning electron microscope with an EDS X-ray analyzer to characterize the inclusions in terms of the chemical composition, size and morphology. The results show that the total oxygen content, the inclusion content and size decrease throughout the AOD-LF-TD process. Additionally, the types of inclusions change at different stages of the process; the inclusions in AOD are mainly CaO-SiO 2-MgO compounds, while in LF and tundish, it is detected mostly CaO-SiO 2-MgO-Al 2O 3 inclusions, besides, inclusions with MnO compound are also found in tundish. Meanwhile, the inclusions in AOD with the compounds of CaO-SiO 2-MgO are found to be close to the slag composition. The variation of the composition of the inclusions in LF and tundish are related to the refining process, continuous casting protection as well as temperature drop.

In order to find out the cause of surface microcrack on 304 austenitic stainless cold rolled coils which is produced in a steel plant of China, lots of studies have been carried out. The results indicated that the copper guide of steekle mill used in hot rolling process contacts directly with the hot rolled coil, so parts of copper melt and glued to the surface of the stainless steel plates due to a higher temperature of stainless steel plates than the copper melting temperature, which leads to deterioration of austenitic grain boundaries. Shear stress produced in the process of repeat-rolling on finishing mill induces the surface microcracks and promotes it. After changing the copper guide to the cast steel one, such kinds of surface microcracks have never appeared. © 2014 Central Iron and Steel Research Institute.
