The Lake Mead Intake No.3 project was located inside the Lake Mead Recreational Area. The project aimed at constructing a third intake located in the largest reservoir of the US, formed by the Hoover Dam, which extended across the Colorado River between Nevada and Arizona. The Vegas Tunnel Constructors (VTC) joint venture was awarded the contract for the project by Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) in 2008. The project included fabrication and positioning an intake riser, excavation and lining of a 185 m deep shaft, and construction of a 4.6 km tunnel using a tunnel boring machine (TBM). The TBM was equipped to handle high water pressure and inflows. It was also equipped with no.3 drill rigs to perform geological investigation or pre-excavation ground treatment to reduce the permeability and increased stability of the rock masses ahead of and around the TBM.
