The morphologies and nonmetallic inclusions type and their effects on fracture behavior of wire rod for steel cord were studied by optic microscope and scanning electron microscope. Tensile strength of the wire rod was measured. The fractured surfaces of wire rod were cup-like and tear-like during service. Crack originated at the interface between nonmetallic inclusions and matrix. Crack was prone to expand rapidly along inclusions during the subsequent process, which led to rupture of steel cord.

In order to find out the differences between domestic and imported LX80B steel wire rods, intrinsic quality and mechanical properties were studied by OM, SEM, EPMA, tensile testing machine and other instruments. The results show that the quantity of brittle non-metallic inclusions of domestic steel wire rods is 5 times as many as imported steel wire rods. The serious carbon segregation in domestic steel wire rods results in delamination fracture during twisting. The oxide scales of domestic and imported steel wire rods are composed of inner layer (Fe1-y O) and outer layer (Fe3O4), yet the thickness of oxide scale for domestic ones is smaller than that of imported ones. The microstructure of domestic ones is composed of proeutectoid cementite and pearlite, while that of imported ones is mainly pearlite. The large variation of lamellar spacing of pearlite results in a large variation of mechanical properties of domestic ones.

In order to find out the differences between domestic and foreign wire rods, the microstructure and mechanical properties were studied by means of OM, SEM, tensile testing machine, optical projectors and other instruments. The results showed that the surface oxide scale of the domestic wire rod was thick and loose, yet the scale of foreign rod was thinner and denser. The scale of all wire rods consisted of Fe1-yO, Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 from inside to outside. Besides sorbite, the microstructure of domestic wire rods consisted of troostite at the edge and center of the cross-section, while that of the foreign wire rods was mainly sorbite and fine pearlite. The core segregation grade of the domestic wire rods was higher than that of the foreign wire rods. Due to the smaller interlamellar spacing of the domestic wire rods, the tensile strength and reduction of area were higher than these of the foreign wire rods. However, the smaller interlamellar spacing lead to the poorer cold-drawn performance.
