The Yangzhou Slender West Lake tunnel passes through the hard plastic clay stratum by slurry shield machine in full section. During the construction process, surface subsidence accidents occurred many times after halting the slurry shield machine. The disintegration and softening of hard plastic clay in soaking condition are investigated by experimental study. The analysis of reason of surface collapsing by combining with field data, and the discussion about the procedure of surface collapsing propose corresponding preventive measures on collapsing in slurry shield construction in the hard plastic clay stratum. This study concludes: disintegration and softening of hard plastic clay occur when the slurry shield shutdown in slurry soaking condition, which generates the local cavity above the excavation face. With the time prolonging, the local cavity gradually develops to the surface, and ultimately forms the ground collapse. It is suggested to avoid halting machine when slurry shield go through full section hard plastic clay stratum. When halting machine is inevitable, reducing the halting time, avoiding the building region, meanwhile strengthening the monitoring and grouting reinforcement in the stratum above the excavation face are suggested to prevent collapsing. © 2017, Science Press. Aiming at discussing the influencing behavior of grain sorting on the compressibility and permeability characteristics of the dredged slurry with high water content in reclaimed land, tests of the dredged slurries occurring grain sorting in two Chinese reclaimed lands were done by the refitted compressibility-permeability apparatus. The testing results show the compression curve of dredged slurries can be normalized by the EICL. For the dredged slurries after sorting, e*100 and Cc* increases linearly with the increasing clay content by logarithmic relation. In the bi-logarithmic coordinate, the permeability coefficient increases linearly with the increasing void ratio of slurries. When the void ratios are the same, the permeability coefficients decrease with the increasing clay content. Finally, the quantitative evaluation method on the compressibility and permeability characteristics considering the clay content was suggested. © 2014 ejge.

Aiming at studying the sorting law of particles in the self-weight sedimentation for dredged slurries with high water content, self-weight sedimentation tests on six kinds of dredged slurries in China were done. The testing results show the sorting behavior is influenced by the initial water content and soil property, and the sorting extent grows with the increasing initial water content, while it decreases with the increasing liquid limit, then the sorting degree was suggested to evaluate the sorting extent. Basing on the above studies, three classifications for soil were obtained according to the maximal sorting degree, namely the sorting-easy soil, sorting-weak soil and sorting-difficult soil, and the sketchy identification method was also given. Besides, the self-weight settlement of sorting-easy soil has three phases with the increasing initial water content, namely the uniform settlement, transitional settlement and sorting settlement, and the critical water contents are about 5 and 8 times of the liquid limit for these three phases. © 2014 ejge.

Ventilating vacuum method can overcome the clogging problem which often occurs on the traditional vacuum method dewatering dredged clays with high initial water contents. However, how to analyze the anti-clogging behavior of ventilating vacuum method is an important issue in practical engineering. A radial drainage model was established based on the filtration theory developed by Ruth. The vanity of the model was verified using the test results of ventilating vacuum, and the change law in average radical dewatering resistance of dewatering layer which reflects the filtration performance was investigated during the dewatering process. It is indicated that the dewatered layer is compacted by traditional vacuum method during the dewatering process. Its corresponding pore structure is unstable, thus the drainage pipeline often clogs. While the technique of ventilating vacuum provides a powerful way to overcome the clogging problem, and the pore structure is stable during the dewatering process.

Large strain generally occurs in dredged clay with high water content under external loading. The traditional axisymmetric small-strain consolidation theory developed by Barron is no longer applicable. Based on the Gibson large-strain consolidation theory and the Hansbo equal-strain consolidation theory, the axisymmetric large strain consolidation (ALSC) model is established under equal strain. ALSC accounts for radial and vertical flows and variation of compressibility and permeability of dredged clay with high water content. The equations established by Gibson, Hansbo and Kjellman are the special cases of ALSC. Based on the finite difference method, the calculation program for ALSC is compiled. The ALSC model and the small-strain model are simulated, and the validity of ALSC is verified. The results show that when the soil deformation is small, the predicted consolidation degree and the excess pore water pressure results of ALSC model are in good agreement with the Barron ones. When the soil deformation is large, the final settlement and consolidation rate of ALSC model and "Barron+Terzaghi" model depend on soil parameters. When Cc/Ck=1, the final settlement of ALSC model is less than that of "Barron+Terzaghi" model, but the consolidation rate is relatively the same. If the compression coefficient av remains unchanged during consolidation process, the final settlement is larger but the consolidation rate is slower for ALSC model (Ck =1) than the ones for "Barron+ Terzaghi" model. © 2016, Editorial Office of Chinese Journal of Geotechnical Engineering. A method that cut out a beam with unit width from a plate is usually applied to structure analysis of base plate of sluice and pump station on soft foundation. It should be pointed out that the stress and strain characteristics of this kind of plate obtained from this simplified analytic method can not be expressed entirely. In this paper a semi-analytic FEM is used to analyze the behavior of force-bearing and deformation of elastic base-board with different ratios of length to width and different elastic base modulus in semi-infinite space. The plane strain analysis under the same mechanical parameters is also carried out. The comparison shows that the maximum tensile stress obtained from the plane strain algorithm is 33% larger than that obtained from the space algorithm. The ratio is increased with the ratio of stiffness.

Relying on the design parameters of a low head pumping station in the first phase of east route in the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the flow in a low head vertical flow pump system model, which consists of an elbow inlet channel, axial flow pump itself and siphon outlet conduit, is simulated based on the steady 3D turbulent Reynolds averaged N-S equations and RNG k-ε turbulence model. The flow pattern in the model and the pressure distribution on the impeller blade surfaces are analyzed under three typical conditions, namely, small discharge (0.180 m3/s), design discharge (0.299 m3/s) and large discharge (0.360 m3/s). The hydraulic performance of the pump model is predicted and compared with the test results. The results indicate that the numerical results are basically consistent with the test data, especially at the best efficiency point, and the maximum error is less than 2% within the flow rate interested. Under design flow condition, the 3D turbulent flows in the inlet and outlet conduits are basically the same as the flows in the inlet and outlet conduits when they are simulated separately. The flow fields in the inlet conduit remain the same under different operating conditions, but not in the outlet conduit. © 2016, Editorial Department of Journal of Drainage and Irrigation Machinery Engineering.
