The paper presents the feasibility of alkanity compound material from municipal solid waste(MSW) in the development of mortar with acceptable properties. In the study, alkanity compound material was utilized along with ordinary Portland cement as solidification binder to treat sewage sludge. The results showed that the matrixes with sludge and alkanity compound material have a strong fixing capacity for heavy metals: Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni. Specimens with only 10% cement content was observed to be sufficient to achieve the target compressive strength of 0.3Mpa requried for landfill disposal. Addition of alkanity compound material can improve the strength of matrix. The Volume change was little in the study. The disposal of sewage sludge with alkanity compound material can minimize the enlargement of the landfill volume and stabilize the heavy metals effectively. © Sila Science. All rights reserved. Based on the laboratary experiment, the variation of the fraction transformations and mobility of Cu and Zn in municipal sludge with pH were discussed in this study. The results show that pH has an important influence on the fraction transformations and mobility of Cu and Zn. The oxidizable fraction and residual fraction are the main ones of Cu in sludge solutions, While the percentage of acid soluble /exchangeable fraction and reducible fraction are not negligible to the fractions of Zn in sludge solutions. According to the fractions of Cu and Zn, the stability of Cu is high and the bioavailabilty is poor, but the mobility and bioavailabilty of Zn are all high. It is concluded that with pH level increased the mobility and bioavailabilty of Cu and Zn have dropped according to the experiment result that the fractions of Cu and Zn have been transferred to oxidizable fraction and residual fraction. © 2011 IEEE. To prevent the contamination of the pollutant leakage, the bottom of municipal solid waste landfill site is ordinarily liner layer. The solidified sludge can be a new kind of liner material by analysis. To make clear contaminants transportation in the blocking layer, the hydrodynamic dispersion parameters must be verified. It is impossible to obtain hydrodynamic dispersion parameters of sludge solidified layer with low permeability by the existing column tests and methods. To solve the problem, the breakthrough curve of Cr6+ as tipical representative is obtained by the improved flexible wall permeameter. Based on the breakthrough curve of Cr6+, the hydrodynamic dispersion parameters can be calculated by the derived formulas. And then, the parameters were used to analyze the transference of heavy metal Cr6+ in solidified sludge-soil-water layers. The time for transference was 100 years. Finite element method was used to simulate the transference circumstances. The concentration and distribution scopes were achieved in 10, 50, 60 and 100 years. Compared with it, the situation without solidified sludge layer was also analyzed. As shown in the results, the transference velocity is quicker, the concentration is higher and the distribution scope is larger under the same conditions. According to the experiment and numerical analysis, the solidified sludge layer has an important effect on postponing the transference of Cr6+. Source

The availability of heavy metals in four kinds of sludge under the influence of different pH values are studied in the paper. According to the experiment results, the pH value has an important influence on the mobility and bioavailability of heavy metals in sludge. Sewage sludge is classified as a municipal solid waste, according to China regulations. The objective of this work was to investigate the environmental geotechnique properties of the stabilized/solidified admixtures of alkanity compound meterial and sewage sludge. In this study, solidification/stabilization (S/S) of sewage sludge using alkanity compound material (ACM) was carried out. The effects of increased substitution of sludge solids in the S/S mix designs on the treated samples geotechnique and chemical characteristics were investigated. The geotechnique characteristics studied were plasticity index, liquid limit, uniformity coefficient, coefficient of curvature, permeability, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and changes in crystalline phases while chemical characteristics studied were leachability of heavy metals. Results indicated the optimum mix design for S/S of sewage sludge using ACM in terms of cost-effectiveness and treatment efficiency was 330 g sludge, 1650 g ACM, 4 g CaCl2, 2 g Ca(OH)2 and 254.1 g water. The superior geotechnique properties and low leached heavy metal concentrations shown for this mix design indicate that alkanity compound material subsituting OPC as a binder could be appropriate for the treatment of municipal sewage sludge in order to convert the sludge into an inexpensive and effective low-grade building material or for landfill. © Sila Science.
