The Crowbar System is a key protection system for the Super Conducting Magnet Power Supplies (SCMPSs) of JT-60SA, it is a Safety Relevant component and it is designed to be seismic resistant. The Crowbar System is operated in case of faults, quench of superconducting coils, plasma disruption or earthquake event, and it has to carry the current flowing through the superconducting coils in order to protect them and the SCMPS from over-voltages. The circuit configuration is based on a hybrid-making-switch, composed by a bidirectional-static-switch with a mechanical-switch and a varistor in parallel. The static-switch is composed by eight thyristors in bidirectional configuration (four connected in parallel and four in antiparallel), and it is designed to be able to safely intervene even if one thyristor or the mechanical-switch is not operating. The mechanical-switch (rated 50 kA making capacity) takes some tens of milliseconds to close, limiting the conduction time of thyristors. The overvoltage protection is performed by a voltage transducer, a Break-Over-Diode (BOD) and a varistor assuring a fast intervention with a high redundancy protection level. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Fast Plasma Position Control Coils (FPPCC) PSs control the vertical position of the plasma during a plasma shot, to prevent Vertical Displacement Event (VDE), using FPPC coils installed in vacuum vessel for JT-60SA. For this task, the FPPCC PSs have to be very fast for reacting to plasma movements. Further, an open loop feed forward voltage control is adopted in order to achieve a fast control of FPPCC PSs. The main characteristics are: 4-quadrant AC/DC converter 12-pulse with circulating current, DC load voltage ±1000. V and DC load current ±5. kA.The overvoltage induced by FPPC coil during a plasma disruption can reach 10. kV and it is protected by a nonlinear resistor in parallel to the crowbar up to its intervention. All these technical characteristics have strongly influenced the design of the FPPCC converter and transformers which have been validated by simulation model of FPPCC PS. The outcomes of the simulation allowed to finalize the performances and dynamic behavior of voltage response. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

The contract includes the provision of 18 Irizar i2e 18.73m electric articulated buses (BRT), the charging stations at the end of each line with fast charging infrastructure, and slower charging at the depots. The engineering work to accommodate two dedicated bus lanes will commence in 2017 and launch of the service will take place on 1 April 2019. The Agglomeration of the Basque-Adour Coast will be the first in France to have two complete lines with a 100% electric bus system. The Irizar i2e will feature a TramBus design, incorporating technology 100% developed within the Irizar Group, including the electric motor propulsion system from Alconza, Jema inverters, and the energy storage system developed by Irizar e-mobility. The first Irizar i2e 18 meter (BRT) electric articulated bus unit has undergone durability testing in the IDIADA facility with very satisfactory results. Its commercialization is planned for the beginning of 2017.

One of the main aims of the EC project HEMIS is to design a prognostic health monitoring system for electrical powertrain components in order to enhance the safety and maintainability of electric vehicles. This paper outlines some of the preliminary work carried out in the areas of safety and failure analysis, based on a generic architecture that aims to represent common features of a wide range of electric vehicles.

The company JEMA has delivered to the Joint European Torus (JET facility at Culham) the enhanced radial field amplifier (ERFA). This device is a high frequency, high power amplifier aimed at correcting instabilities due to fast plasma disturbances. The system is composed of four identical units connected in series through a connection box delivering up to ±12 kV, ±5 kA (60 MVAr) in four quadrant operation. Each unit is composed of an input converter stage, a DC link energy storage stage, an output inverter and an output bypass (for continuing operation in case of a unit failure). ERFA works as an energy exchanger between the internal DC link capacitors bank and the JET radial field coils. The input converter compensates for power losses in the JET coils and the ERFA during operation. The ERFA control system is fundamental for the amplifier performance to meet the speed of response required with the flexibility to achieve this for an unpredictable reference and for a wide range of load coil configurations. This paper covers the control architecture, the real-time evaluation and high speed response to the system requirements, and the fast exchange rate of data among ERFA units. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.
