The YBCO material is synthesized under the controlled environment by the sol-gel method. Standard characterization techniques like FTIR, UV/VIS/NIR spectroscopy, XRD and TGA have been employed to understand the phase transition during the growth of the sample. YBCO shows some interesting results about the properties related to different phases of formation as two different crystalline phases are observed in the sol form before annealing. Various optical and crystalline properties during the phase transition are investigated and an attempt is made to study the dynamics of the phase transition.

Glasses with composition xLi2O-(50-x)Bi2O3-10ZnO-40B2O3 have been prepared by conventional melt quenching method. Density and molar volume decrease with increase in Li2O content. The IR and Raman studies indicate that these glasses are made up of [BiO3] [BiO6], [BO3] and [BO4] basic structural units. Li2O acts as a network modifier and modifies the glass structure. The optical absorption studies reveal that optical band gap decreases with Li2O content whereas Urbach energy (ΔE) shows an increasing trend. The metallization criterion is found to be in the range 0.368-0.386, indicating the suitability of these glasses for non-linear optical properties. © 2012 Copyright The Indian Ceramic Society.
