The recent increase in the deployment of systems consisted of sensors and actuators has raised expectations for services that can contribute by their use to a reduction in the amount of unacceptable environmental loads. For the present, however, systems that can suitably support such services need to be deployed by optimizing each system according to the sensors and actuators that are used. The consequent high cost is tending to hinder the dissemination of such services. To deal with this situation, NEC is advancing R&D of management platform technologies that can reduce the deployment cost of this kind of service. This paper describes the recently developed technologies and their standardization and supporting activities. In addition, this paper also introduces an outline of a verification experiment demonstration performed at a convenience store chain.

Locating the target data as close as possible to the CPU is of importance in the high-speed processing of a large amount of big data. The Express5800/Scalable HA Server series are servers optimized for use as big data processing platforms capable of using a large-capacity memory of up to 2 TB. Building a high cost-efficiency system using a high-speed PCI Express SSD is attracting recent market attention. The Express5800/Scalable HA Server series products are suitable for such a system because they support multiple I/O slots. This paper introduces their excellent advantages and discusses the actual examples in which their features may be usefully applied.

In the disaster-affected areas of the Great East Japan Earthquake, many people are still living in temporary housing shelters. In these areas, people are facing the issue of setting up "community functions," such as for the transmission and sharing of important information, and for communications among residents, etc. At the same time, they are facing the issue of their local communities collapsing due to depopulation and ageing. This is happening not only in the disaster-affected areas but also in various local municipalities. NEC's "community development support system" will contribute to establishing new communities in such areas and municipalities. The system employs digital terrestrial television, which is a familiar device to many people, as an information terminal, and broadcasts video content produced by local municipalities, town or autonomous neighborhood associations, NPOs, local residents, etc. in a timely manner.

This paper introduces the efforts made at NEC in the user interface improvement project based on a user-centered design concept for the ESMPRO/ServerManager, which is the server management software that comes bundled with the Express5800 server. The project is being executed in four stages: 1) evaluation of the usability of current products, 2) feedback surveys of users, 3) arrangement of concept and development of prototype, and 4) application to the actual product. While some of the user interface improvements have already been applied to the actual software, the project is ongoing and the product is being improved continually.

Seven Bank, Ltd. and the NEC Group have co-developed an innovative ATM (automated teller machine) and started to introduce it to the shops in March, 2011. This new type of ATM has pursued better usability and a superior environmental performance from the viewpoint of the user. It has been developed under a process that employs user- centered design concepts in order to achieve a product that will enable a variety of users, including persons with visual impairments or those from overseas countries, to use the machine safely and securely. At the same time, we have aimed to develop a product that is environmentally friendly.
