After a brief presentation of the European Directives on seed marketing of conservation varieties, data relative to their implementation status are given and discussed in relation to on farm conservation of landraces. Although generally aimed to ensure in situ conservation and the sustainable use of plant genetic resources, the Directives focus on seed production and marketing instead of genetic resource conservation per se. At present, their application has only partially favoured the registration of landraces maintained on farm or preserved in ex situ collections. They can be estimated in thousands in Europe, while only a few landrace with a verified status (51 out of a total of 184 conservation varieties) are presently included in the Common Catalogue. Reasons for this scarce registration are discussed. The European Directives on seed marketing of conservation varieties are a tool to promote on farm conservation of landraces that should be used to a greater extent than at present. Registration of landraces should be strongly and principally promoted by public bodies as a measure to give access to the genetic resources, preserve them on the long term and favour the economic profit of the farmers maintaining them. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Obesity has been estimated to cost the EU some 70 annually through health care costs and lost productivity, and additionally over-consumption of salt, sugar and saturated fats and under-consumption of fruit and vegetables cause almost 70,000 premature deaths annually in the UK alone. Member States have initiated a variety of policy interventions to encourage healthy eating including prohibitions on advertising certain foods to children, promotion of fruit and vegetable consumption, nutrition labelling, dialogue with food industry to improve food product composition and regulation of school meals and public sector canteens to ensure healthy food offerings. Rarely have these been evaluated in a systematic manner. The EATWELL project will gather benchmark data on healthy eating interventions in Member States and review existing evaluations of the effectiveness of interventions using a 3 stage procedure: 1. The impact of the intervention on consumer attitudes, consumer behaviour and diets; 2. The impact of the change in diets on obesity and health; 3. The value attached by society to these changes, measured in life years gained, cost savings and QALYs. Where evaluations have been inadequate EATWELL will gather secondary data and analyse them using models mainly from the psychology and economics disciplines. Particular attention will be paid to lessons that can be learned from the private sector that are transferable to the healthy eating campaigns in the public sector. Through consumer surveys and workshops with other stakeholders, EATWELL will assess the acceptability of the range of potential interventions. Armed with scientific quantitative evaluations of policy interventions and their acceptability to stakeholders, EATWELL will recommend most appropriate interventions for Member States and the EU, provide a one-stop guide to methods and measures in intervention evaluation, and outline data collection priorities for the future.

The objective is to further integrate/refine the EuroFIR Food Platform (EFP), to improve/support the ways research is undertaken into relationships between food, diets and health in Europe. Our focus is on extending application and exploitation of validated food data and tools for pan-European nutrition studies and networked usage, implementation of standards and best practice. This together forms the basis of long-term sustainability through the newly established legal entity EuroFIR AISBL). Six Work Packages are included: Quality standards & certification; Systems integration & operational support; Integration & business development; Training; Dissemination & Management. The revised consortium has 35 existing EuroFIR partners (18 as 3rd parties/EuroFIR AISBL members). The already achieved high-level institutional commitment will be further strengthened. The new General Assembly consists of executive representatives of all beneficiaries (who are also AISBL Members), thus real and durable integration is achievable. The Executive Board will work closely with EuroFIR AISBL to provide an integrated approach to joint activities and stakeholder engagements. A high-level External Advisory Board of key users/stakeholders from Europe and internationally will ensure that food data, other products and services are fine-tuned to stakeholders needs, keeping Europe at the forefront of leadership and innovation in this area. Outputs are consistent with the ETP `Food for Life and will further support Theme 2 (FP7) in food and nutrition research contributing to the structuring of the European Research Area and world-class scientific/technological excellence. Additionally, the outputs bring the EFP in alignment with the current European CEN Standard on Food Data and its application.

EU Directive 396/2005 states that methods are needed to account for cumulative and aggregate exposure in pesticides regulation . 27% of food samples had multiple residues in the 2006 EU residue monitoring report. The Eurobarometer shows pesticides are one of the principal worries of EU consumers regarding food safety. Industry needs clear criteria to decide on large investments in product development. The central aim of the ACROPLIS project is: to develop a framework for cumulative and aggregate risk assessment of pesticides in an understandable way, accessible for all actors involved in European risk assessment and management. ACROPOLIS will: 1) study the data needs, data availability and uncertainties for cumulative exposure and effect assessment in a probabilistic risk assessment framework; 2) integrate models describing various routes of exposure into an aggregate exposure model; 3) develop new toxicological approaches for identifying possible additive or synergistic effects and developing a strategy for refinement of cumulative assessment groups; 4) integrate cumulative and aggregate risk models including uncertainty analyses in a web-based tool, including accessible data for all stakeholders; 5) improve risk assessment strategies in Europe by analysing stakeholders attitudes, by training and by discussing the new methodology in several stakeholder conferences. The project brings together the key experts and models in Europe including dietary exposure MCRA, dermal and inhalation exposure ConsExpo, user exposure EUROPOEM and UK POEM, dose-response PROAST and risk characterisation IPRA. The new integrated model will be tested in case studies with conazoles and pyrethroids and validated with biomarker and duplicate diet studies. The model software will be tested in different countries to ensure its usability at the international level. Overall ACROPOLIS will advance the scientific foundation to meet policy needs, protect EU consumers and address their concerns.

Flavouring, Additive and Food Contact Material Exposure Task: FACET FACET will deliver to the European Community a sustainable surveillance system, to estimate target food chemical intake. The project will consist of three main groupings of its 20 partners. The Chemicals group will prioritise the flavourings, additives and food contact materials for investigation and the food categories applicable to them. The Food group will take those food categories and will establish food ingredient occurrence data through the primary collection of food packaging material and the recording of all food ingredients in purchased foods. It will also create tired food consumption databases linked to the target food categories. In addition, where intake data is limited, models of regional diets will be developed. A group on chemical concentration will provide data on the concentration of target chemicals in target food groups. Databases on food intake, food chemical occurrence and food chemical concentration will be linked in algorithms which will be converted into computer code for the estimation of probabilistic exposure to target food chemical intake.
