R&D trends, which specialists of the Institute follow, are indicated. The national standards (GOST R) developed in recent years for design and development of vessels and high-pressure pipelines, as well as the scientific and engineering capabilities of the Institute's specialists and pilot production are presented in the article. Problems are formulated and approaches for their solution are evaluated for the purpose of increasing the efficiency and quality of an assessment of technical state and remaining life. A conception and research version of a software system intended to automate the acquisition, storage, and processing of information in the preparation and performance of an industrial safety inspection and drawing of conclusions are developed. As a result, the time needed to perform the steps involved is reduced while the increase in the quality of an assessment of the technical state and remaining life helps to assure industrial safety. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York

Temperature fields and thermal stresses developed during heating of a coking chamber before the start of coking and during cooling of the chamber after completion of coking are studied for two design versions of the bottom part–support shell welded joint. The permissible number of cycles is estimated. It is demonstrated that while in the existing design of the studied area cracks in the welded joint appear roughly after 1.5–2 years of operation, in the design of the bottom part–support shell joint area proposed by IrkutskNIIkhimmash specialists the coking chamber can operate without repair of this area for a rated operating time of 20 years. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York
