Worldwide, a great part of the existing silos is older than 50 years and require renovation in the coming years. For example, crack repair was necessary for a twin compartment silo, which is made of prestressed concrete and can hold up to 20 000 t of sugar, from 1962. In this context, a preliminary investigation was made with the aim of comparing the different possibilities for restoration. Eventually, strengthening through textile reinforced concrete was chosen. Approximately 14 000 m2 of textile reinforcement and 150 t of fine grained concrete were used for approximately 3 100 m2 restoration area. © 2013 Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co. The knowledge of mass and energy flows in a cane sugar factory is a crucial aspect in order to enhance the plant performance and detect process deficiencies. The development of the advanced Monitoring System (AMS) based on the Sugars software allows nowadays visualising the sugar process by connecting the software to the process and laboratory information system. The AMS was first introduced in 2004 to the sugar industry. experience gained over the last few years is reported in this paper. Besides the creation of the mass and energy balance, the system can be used for data reconciliation with special regard to measured flows, temperatures and pressures as well as laboratory analytical data. Calculated and measured data are compared to facilitate improvements to process performance and reliability. The AMS requires approximately 100-150 data points (cane mass flow, analytical data, pressures and temperatures) to characterise and display the actual process operations with high accuracy. The AMS is a process monitoring tool allowing the sugar engineer to validate the operation and performance of the process. By defining benchmark values (key performance indices), it is possible to monitor and subsequently improve the performance of process equipment and the processes.

Several process steps are required to decolourize sugar liquor in a raw sugar refinery. One typical treatment step employs ion exchange columns (IEX) to reduce the colour in the sugar liquor. An alternative process step is using granular activated carbon (GAC) in pulsed bed adsorption columns to decolourize the sugar liquor. This paper compares the installation of a GAC against an IEX plant concerning space demand, investment costs, operating costs, performance and environmental aspects in a VHP raw sugar refinery.

The export of power from cane sugar factories makes possible the production of "green energy" and proves nowadays to be a substantial source of revenue as well. Looking to the co-generation potential of the cane sugar industry, the power export is in fact still at a very early stage. This report gives an overview of concepts and measures that are required to achieve a low steam demand and high electrical power export for different factory concepts. The impact of sugar extraction by mills and diffusers as well as the option of producing refined sugar in an attached refinery is investigated. The factory models investigated allow steam demands to reduce to the range of 26-34% steam on cane. Such factory concepts are not theoretical any more but have been implemented and successfully proven in several plants in India, Brazil and Pakistan in the last five years. The report gives an overview of the actual achievements.
