The International Islamic University Malaysia , also known as IIUM or UIAM, is one of the Public Institutions of Higher Education in Malaysia. Its main campus is located in Gombak, Selangor with its Centre for Foundation Studies situated in Petaling Jaya and Gambang, Pahang and its medical-centric branch in Kuantan, Pahang. The university is sponsored by eight governments from the Organisation of the Islamic Conference . It is distinct from the International Islamic University Islamabad, Pakistan and International Islamic University in Dhaka, Bangladesh.The university was established in 23 May 1983, founded on Islamic principles. Purpose: To investigate the influence of myopia on peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness using Cirrus optical coherence tomography (OCT) in normal eyes. METHOD: Ninety-eight eyes of normal participants with various degrees of myopia were recruited in this study. The RNFL thickness was measured with high-definition (HD), spectral-domain Cirrus OCT (Cirrus HD-OCT; Carl Zeiss, Dublin, CA). The association between RNFL thickness and its spherical equivalent was evaluated with linear regression analysis. RESULTS: The RNFL thickness was 119.2±16.8 μm, 117.1±16.8 μm, 75.9±16.1 μm, and 64.9±9.8 μm in the superior, inferior, temporal, and nasal quadrants, respectively, with an average thickness of 94.3±8.6 μm. The mean RNFL thickness was thinner in highly and moderately myopic eyes (93±7.9 μm and 92.6±7.7 μm, respectively, P=0.0001) compared with low myopic eyes (102.2±9 μm). A significant linear correlation was found between the spherical equivalent and the RNFL thickness in the superior (r=0.386, P=0.0001) and inferior quadrants (r=0.448, P=0.0001), and the average RNFL thickness (r=0.373, P=0.0001). Conclusions: Myopia can be a confounding factor in the assessment of RNFL thickness attributed to its influence on the RNFL thickness. Therefore, we recommend a careful interpretation of RNFL data, especially those obtained from eyes with moderate-to-high myopia. © 2012 by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

In the present paper we consider the countable state p-adic Potts model on . A main aim is to establish the existence of the strong phase transition for the model. In our study, we essentially use one dimensionality of the model. To prove the existence of the phase transition, we reduce the problem to the investigation of an infinite-dimensional nonlinear equation. We find a condition on weights to show that the derived equation has two solutions. We show that measures corresponding to first and second solutions are a p-adic Gibbs and generalized p-adic Gibbs measures, respectively. Moreover, it is proved that the p-adic Gibbs measure is bounded, and the generalized one is not bounded. This implies the existence of the strong phase transition. Note that it turns out that the obtained condition does not depend on values of the prime p and, therefore, an analogous fact is not true when the number of spins is finite. Note that, in the usual real case, if one considers a one-dimensional translation-invariant model with nearest neighbor interaction, then such a model does not exhibit a phase transition. Nevertheless, we should stress that our model exhibits a unique p-adic Gibbs measure. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA Medialab srl.

The effect of the recently developed graphene nanoflakes (GNFs) on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been investigated in this paper. The rationale behind the use of GNFs is their unique physical and thermal properties. Experiments show that GNFs can enhance the thermal conductivity of base fluids and results also revealed that GNFs are a potential enhancer of PCR efficiency; moreover, the PCR enhancements are strongly dependent on GNF concentration. It was found that GNFs yield DNA product equivalent to positive control with up to 65% reduction in the PCR cycles. It was also observed that the PCR yield is dependent on the GNF size, wherein the surface area increases and augments thermal conductivity. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed to analyze the heat transfer through the PCR tube model in the presence and absence of GNFs. The results suggest that the superior thermal conductivity effect of GNFs may be the main cause of the PCR enhancement.

In the present paper, we introduce a new kind of p-adic measures for (q + 1)-state Potts model, called generalized p-adic quasi Gibbs measure. For such a model, we derive a recursive relations with respect to boundary conditions. We employ a dynamical system approach to establish phase transition phenomena for the given model. Namely, using the derived recursive relations we define a one-dimensional fractional p-adic dynamical system. We show that if q is divisible by p, then such a dynamical system has two repelling and one attractive fixed points. In this case, there exists a strong phase transition. If q is not divisible by p, then the fixed points are neutral, and this yields the existence of a quasi phase transition. © 2012 Polish Scientific Publishers.

The effect of trade liberalization on the environment can be directly linked to energy consumption, because energy consumption and production are the underlying cause of most pollutants that harm the environment. The descriptive statistics show that average annual growth of energy consumption per capita after trade liberalization varies among countries; hence it is a possibility that the effect of trade liberalization is conditional on factors other than liberalization per se. The regression results show that trade liberalization per se does not affect the growth of energy consumption of the developing countries analyzed, but its interaction with capital per labor reduces the growth of energy consumption as capital per labor increases. However, the effect is only significant after a certain minimum threshold level capital per labor is reached. On the other hand, economic growth increases energy consumption and its effect is not conditioned on trade liberalization. These two different effects mean that, with regards to energy consumption, countries at a higher level of economic development are more likely to reap the benefit of liberalization relative to less developed countries. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

This paper presents a review of acoustic-wave based MEMS devices that offer a promising technology platform for the development of sensitive, portable, real-time biosensors. MEMS fabrication of acoustic wave based biosensors enables device miniaturization, power consumption reduction and integration with electronic circuits. For biological applications, the biosensors are integrated in a microfluidic system and the sensing area is coated with a biospecific layer. When a bioanalyte interacts with the sensing layer, mass and viscosity variations of the biospecific layer can be detected by monitoring changes in the acoustic wave properties such as velocity, attenuation, resonant frequency and delay time. Few types of acoustic wave devices could be integrated in microfluidic systems without significant degradation of the quality factor. The acoustic wave based MEMS devices reported in the literature as biosensors and presented in this review are film bulk acoustic wave resonators (FBAR), surface acoustic waves (SAW) resonators and SAW delay lines. Different approaches to the realization of FBARs, SAW resonators and SAW delay lines for various biochemical applications are presented. Methods of integration of the acoustic wave MEMS devices in the microfluidic systems and functionalization strategies will be also discussed. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

The present invention relates to a method for producing recombinant stem bromelain. Total RNA is isolated from pineapple plant (11) and used for reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction to generate multiple copies of stem bromelain gene (12). The gene is then cloned into a cloning vector (13), then transformed to a competent cell to produce an entry clone (14). After identifying and selecting the positively transformed entry clone (15), the stem bromelain gene is sub-cloned into a destination vector (16) and transformed into host cells to produce recombinant cells (17). After identifying and selecting the positively transformed recombinant cells (18), the recombinant cells are induced to express recombinant stem bromelain (19). Subsequently, the recombinant cells are harvested and the recombinant stem bromelain purified (20). The recombinant stem bromelain produced is in an active form and demonstrates activity similar to native stem bromelain.
