Lubrication is essential for the advancement of energy efficient modern industries. Lubricants are widely used in industry to minimize friction and wear between tools and moving components. Additives are utilized as common lubricants reinforcement in order to achieve overall improved tribological properties. This study presents and discusses the tribological properties of friction, wear, and extreme pressure of two synthetic lubricants: GL-4 (SAE 75W-85), a fully-formulated oil; and Poly-alpha olefin 8 (PAO 8) base oil. These lubricants were doped at various filler concentrations (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0wt%) of CuO and Al2O3 nanoparticle additives. Anti-wear tests were performed with an Optimol SRV 4 tester, according to ASTM D5707; extreme pressure tests were performed with a T-02 four-ball tribotester. Wear scar diameters (WSD) were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). Anti-wear results showed a decrease of up to 18% and 14%, on coefficient of friction (COF) and WSD with 2wt% CuO/PAO 8. The load carrying capacity (poz) of GL-4 and PAO 8 increased by ~14% and ~273%, respectively, with the addition of CuO nanoparticles. However, the incorporation of Al2O3 nanoparticles was not as effective, showing an increase of up to 18% and 12% on poz for GL-4 and PAO 8, respectively. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

A method for predicting the tribological properties of lubricants was based on the estn. of limiting pressure of seizure and limiting load of the wear for the lubricant consisting of a com. packages of antiseizure and antiwear additives (1-4% by mass, 3-8% by mass, resp.) and mineral oil. According the adopted procedure, samples of lubricants of different compn. were prepd. The limiting pressure and load were detd. exptl. The coeffs. of the regression equations were calcd.

To address the needs of the manufacturing industry, the automation of quality inspection processes is often performed. Ensuring the high reliability and accuracy of measurement usually requires the development of specialized systems dedicated for specific applications. In the paper, a multi-camera vision system developed for the automatic inspection of metal shafts in the automotive industry is presented. The novel solution of the inspection system is based on the application of a set of three cameras that allow the inspection of shafts in separated areas. The system enables the detection and recognition of the following features: thread, knurls, grooves, and measurements of the shaft length. The image processing is performed with the use of filtering, morphology operations (dilation and erosion), and edge detection. The two-dimensional Look-up Table has been created in order to calculate a correct shaft length considering perspective errors of lenses. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

The article presents the results of tests investigating the influence of the roughness and the texture of the surface on the results of measurements taken with the use of a triangular laser head. As test samples the heads of three steel plungers that were subject to turning, grinding and electrical discharge machining were used. Each surface is characterised by different texture resulting from the directional character of traces left by the machining tool and a varied value of roughness.

The paper presents experimental tests for electromechanical drives for use in ventilation and smoke extraction systems of buildings. The determined characteristics (force, shift, current and voltage as a function of time) enable the assessment of applicability of these drives as the drives of flaps and windows in fire protection systems. The study was conducted using a developed test stand facilitating the determination of characteristics of work of linear and rotary drives in changeable temperatures.

The article presents the results of tribological investigations carried out in the presence of modified greases. The effects of friction conditions and additives like polymers and fullerene carbon nanostructures on the tribological characteristics of greases were investigated. The testing was carried out using a tester under isothermal conditions. After tests, changes in the friction surface and changes in the quality of greases were evaluated. To identify changes in the surface layer due to the friction, SEM/EDS analysis was applied. The change in the oxidation resistance of lubricants was determined by differential scanning calorimetry, DSC. Based on the results, the possible uses of lubricants under mechanical and thermal conditions were evaluated. The additives investigated have clearly changed the properties of the grease and their effects depend on the test temperature.

The paper presents the test results of the antiwear and extreme-pressure properties of vegetable oils. They were compared to mineral machine oil L-AN 46 without additives. Wear scars were analysed during tribological examinations. It was shown that vegetable oils protect friction joints against wear and seizure better than mineral oil. They can be used as the bases for lubricants.

The article presents the method for testing the propriety of joints between the sewage pipes and their sockets, both made of plastics. The joint is made using the friction welding method by rotating the socket and pushing it against the fixed pipe. For testing the propriety of the weld the hybrid vision method was developed, that utilises visible band and infrared band vision tracts. The main element of the system is the infrared camera equipped with uncooled microbolometric sensor. The infrared camera records the infrared radiation, whose intensity depends on the temperature and the properties of the tested object. For detection of the defects of the joint the variation of velocity of heat diffusion is used that occurs inside the material of the object in proximity of the fault, which appears as a local variation of temperature on the surface. The visible light camera is used as an auxiliary tract to assess the surface state of the coupler and to ease the interpretation of the results obtained with the infrared camera. For testing purposes the experimental stand was made to precisely rotate the welded pipe related to the hybrid vision head. The developed method finds its application for testing the joints of pipes and sockets in the production line. © (2015) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
