The final properties of products made from tissue paper are formed both in the production of raw material and during its processing. Embossing of given pattern significantly affects the mechanical properties of products such as wipes or towels. It causes not only linking of layers or increases the thickness, but also changes their mechanical properties. To evaluate the influence of the embossing process on these properties it is necessary to determine the measurable quantity as a basis to study the variation of the properties of tissue paper products. For this purpose, the relative area of the embossed pattern was selected and the original method used to determine its value is described in the paper. Source

Mechanical strength is one of the most important features for products made on the basis of tissue paper, in particular paper towels. Physical properties of paper towels depend on the physical properties of tissue paper from which they were made, but these properties are altered during paper processing, especially at the embossing stage. An important parameter describing the effect of embossing is the relative area of embossed surface. In this article the results of research on the impact of this parameter on the following properties of hygienic paper products are presented: tensile strength, stretch, tensile energy absorption and tensile wet strength.
