The research was carried out by the Instytut Ochrony Roślin – Państwowy Instytut Badawczy (Plant Protection of Institute – National Research Institute) between the years 2009 and 2013 in Poland. Monitoring of cutworm, Agrotis segetum (Den. et Schiff.) andA. exclamationis (L.) was performed at 25 sites. In static field trials in 2011–2013 at experimental station in Winna Góra tests of vegetation protection and technological quality of roots were performed. The technological quality is determined by the content of sucrose, α-amino-N, K, Na, and yield of roots and sugar. This was monitored in relation to cutworm occurrence (A. segetum and A. exclamationis) and to insecticide treatment. The obtained results showed that the largest α-amino-N content was observed in 2012 (23.96), while the smallest in the first year of observation (6.97). All pairs of traits (except K content and Na content) correlated significantly. Beet fresh mass yield positively correlated with K content (r = 0.371), Na content (r = 0.630), α-amino-N content (r = 0.511), and negatively with sugar content (r = –0.659). Sugar content negatively correlated with content of K (r = –0.741), Na (r = –0.610) and α-amino-N (r = –0.867). Content of α-amino-N positively correlated with K content (r = 0.814) as well as Na content (r = 0.413). An important factor determining the technological quality of beet roots was weather conditions during growing season. Chemical treatment was applied based on the pest signaling system, and phenological criteria such as the sum of heat and of effective temperatures for cutworm development. © 2015, Listy Cukrovarnicke a Reparske.
