The structural properties of mesoporous carbons modified by Ag, Au, TiO2 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles were studied using IR, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy. The carbon materials were prepared by the soft-templating method in an acidic medium, with resorcinol and formaldehyde as the carbon precursors and triblock copolymer Lutrol FI27 as a soft template. Spectral analysis has revealed that these carbons are characterized by a repeatable structure. The modification of the carbon surface by the nanoparticles examined has caused some noticeable changes in the Raman, FT-IR and IR spectra of the carbon composites, and most of the influence on the modification of the surface comes from metal oxides. The spectra have also shown that the carbon materials tested contain some ordered fragments of graphene structures similar to those occurring in carbon nanotubes. Source

Nanocryst. Si support was covered with F-C or Si-C-layers produced by plasma-induced chem. vapor deposition of octadecafluorodecahydronaphtalene at 25-150°C in Ar in presence of O 2 (2.2-16% by vol.). The deposited layers were studied for chem. compn. and friction coeff. The F content was 33-48%. The friction coeff. (0.270.39) was much higher than that for the Si support (0.14). Unexpectedly, very low friction coeff. (0.06) was obsd., when the O 2 content In the gas mixt. was 4.4% (F content in the layer 0.4%). Source

Fifteen racemic derivatives of pyrrolidin-2-one were sepd. on a tri(3,5-dlmethylphenylcarboiio)-β-cyclodextrin column by using n-hexane/EtOH or n-hexane/Me 2CHOH in normal mobile phases, H 2O/MeCN reversed phases and MeCN/AcOH or MeCN/AcOH/Et 3N org. phases. EtOH was more efficient than Me 2CHOH in normal phases. The addn. of Et 3N resulted in an improvement of sepn. in reversed phase, where the best results were achieved at pH 3. Source

This article presents the idea of a prototype femtosecond laser for micromachining of materials. The laser consists of a solid-state femtosecond oscillator and a fibre ytterbium-doped amplifier. Femtosecond laser materials processing offers many advantages over the long pulse (i.e. nanosecond) laser micromachining. Ultra-short laser pulses have a unique capacity to interact with different materials without transferring heat to the area surrounding the target. This allows very precise and pure laser-processing, clean cuts and engravings with sharp edges. Source
