Based on the knowledge of local artisanal fishermen and on direct observations, this study presents evidence that the giant manta ray Manta birostris uses the Paranaguá estuarine complex in south Brazil, south-western Atlantic Ocean, in a predictable seasonal pattern. Behavioural observations suggest that the estuary can act as a nursery ground for M. birostris during the summer. © 2015 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles.

The conservation of emblematic threatened species is in highlight nowadays. Interestingly, few invertebrate groups attract scientific attention on this issue while they constitute the vast majority of animal biodiversity. Nevertheless, many invertebrate species are nowadays at risk of extinction. This means that plenty of species are currently disappearing out of sight. During a survey in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean tubes of an endangered species of cerianthid were sampled. This study reports for the very first time the occurrence of the species Phoronis australis in southwestern Atlantic waters and the association of phoronids with the genus Ceriantheomorphe. This raises questions on mutual extinction risks for symbiotic species and also on the criteria for their inclusion on Red Lists.

A new species of tube-dwelling anemone of the genus Ceriantheopsis (Cnidaria: Ceriantharia), Ceriantheopsis lineata sp. nov., is described and can be found in fine sand or mud in the sublittoral zone (0–200 m) from Argentina to Brazil (Warm Temperate South-western Atlantic). This new species is distinguished from its congeners by a number of features, however some characters (directive tentacles, line on tentacles and length of P2) allow a conclusive identification among the other Ceriantheopsis species. The occurrence of the Indo-Pacific reef fish Heniochus acuminatus (Linnaeus, 1758) is confirmed for the southwestern Atlantic. A single adult individual was photographed in a marine reserve off the southeastern coast of Brazil. Two hypotheses explaining the species occurrence are discussed: an aquarium release on the Brazilian coast, and a long-distance dispersal from the Indian Ocean into the Atlantic via South Africa.
