A sensitive and efficient solid-phase microextraction method, based on liquid chromatography and UV-Vis detection, was developed and validated as an alternative method for sample screening prior to LC-MS analysis. It enables the simultaneous determination of ten pesticides in mango fruits. The fiber used was polydimethylsiloxane while optimum SPME conditions employed have been developed and optimized in a previous work. The desorption process was performed in static mode, using acetonitrile as a solvent. The results indicate that the DI-SPME/HPLC/UV-Vis procedure resulted in good linear range, accuracy, precision and sensibility and is adequate for analyzing pesticide residues in mango fruits. The limits of detection (0.6-3.3 mg/kg) and quantification (2.0-10.0 mg/kg) were achieved with values lower than the maximum residue levels (MRLs) established by Brazilian legislation for all pesticides in this study. The average recovery rates obtained for each pesticide ranged from 71.6 to 104.3% at three fortification levels, with the relative standard deviation ranging from 4.3 to 18.6%. The proposed method was applied for the determination of the aforementioned compounds in commercial mango samples and residues of azoxystrobin, fenthion, permethrin, abamectin and bifenthrin were detected in the mango samples, although below the MRLs established by Brazilian legislation. © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH &Co. The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of Conilon coffee seedling, produce under different irrigation levels, with and without hydroretentive in bags and tubes. The experiments were conducted in the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology's nursery in the state of Espírito Santo, Alegre's Campus. The experiments was set up in a split-plot design 4 x 2 x 2, plots of irrigation level of four depths (25; 40; 55 e 70% of ET0), in the subplots recipients in two levels (tube and bag) and in the split split plots in two levels (with and without hydroretentive), in a completely randomize design with four replications. At one hundred and forty days of age, was evaluated the following: plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, shoot and root dry matter, ratio of height/stem diameter, ratio of matter/root and the Dickson's quality index. The seedlings grown in the bags showed higher development to the seedlings grown in tubes. For the seedlings grown in the bags in the depth 40% of ET0is the best, being the depth 70% of the one the provided the best development of the seedling in tubetes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity of different prediction equations to the one maximum repetition (1-RM) test at the bench press exercise (BP) with bar in mixed martial arts (MMA) athletes. The sample was composed by 19 male MMA athletes (27.68 ± 6.19 years). The data collection was performed in two different moments: 1) in 1-RM test; 2) in submaximal test and their respective numbers of repetitions. The paired-sample t test was performed and was noted that, among the six equations compared with the 1-RM test, only the Adams (p= 0.337) and O'Conner's (p= 0.250) equations showed no significant differences. However, there were high Pearson correlation and intraclass correlation coefficients (r= 0.924, ICC= 0.924; r = 0.944, ICC= 0.944), respectively. Never-theless, all equations showed high correlations that ranged between 0.854 and 0.944. In conclusion, for estimation of 1-RM, the predictive equations based on Adams and O'Conner's are valid in MMA athletes. © Edic¸ões Desafio Singular.

This study provides information on the population structure, growth, mortality, maximum recruitment yield, and longevity for pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus subtilis (Pérez-Farfante, 1967) on the coast of Pernambuco state, northeastern Brazil. A total of 1246 specimens (545 males and 701 females) were monthly collected from August 2011 to July 2012. Mean total length of females was higher (11.42 ± 1.61 cm) than males (10.5 ± 1.62 cm) and dominated in the largest length classes. Estimation of von Bertalanffy growth parameters for total length resulted in L∞ of 19.74 cm and k of 1.06 year-1 for males, while females' L∞ was 21.64 cm and k was 1.10 year-1. Mortality of females was higher than males resulting higher value in the exploitation rates. The exploitation rate for maximum recruitment yield was similar between males and females with a value of 0.67, which was above the exploitation rates (0.50-0.64). © The Crustacean Society, 2015. The effect of a 50% reduction of NaCl and its replacement by KCl, CaCl2, and a blend of KCl and CaCl2 (1:1) on the proteolysis and rheological properties of dry fermented sausages was investigated. The reduction or replacement of NaCl by KCl did not cause changes in the electrophoretic profile and the addition of CaCl2 decreased the degradation of sarcoplasmic proteins during the manufacturing process. Samples with a 50% reduction of NaCl showed a higher content of the amino acids Arg, Glu, His, Val, Cys, Lys, and Trp, whereas the samples containing CaCl2 had a higher content of the amino acids Asp, Thr, Ala, Met, Leu, Ile, and Phe. The reduction or replacement of NaCl by KCl decreased sample firmness, whereas the addition of CaCl2 increased the hardness of the samples. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
