This paper aims to present a flexible PHP-based system for on-line creation and use of Web-based courses in Medical University - Sofia. The first version of the system was created in 2002 but due to the rapid development of Internet technologies, in 2010 the system underwent several revisions. Structural and technological renovation was carried out. The new system "Interactive Biochemistry - Sofia" (IBS) is composed of two interfaces: student and administrative. The main modules of the system for the students are "Lectures" (source of knowledge), interactive "Tests" for (self)- assessment, "Virtual Patients" (clinical case simulations to improve and assess professional skills), "Virtual Models", "Practicals" and "Teachers Training". The administrative module is used by the teachers for easy creation and editing of on-line courses. It is a helpful tool for teachers with no designer skills. The system is a good example of the integration of the latest achievements in biochemistry (modern content), information and communication technologies (Web environment), pedagogy (flexible learning), and medicine (problem-based learning). All modules, used by students and teachers, are updated and revised. The work of the teachers to create and edit content in all modules is facilitated. © 2011 IADIS. Source

An interactive evolutionary algorithm is presented in the paper, designed to solve integer multi-objective convex integer optimization problems. The algorithm is population-based. A heuristic procedure is used to accelerate the search process, so that the algorithm performs considerably faster than the usual population-based algorithms. The algorithm is developed to perform in the variables' space, but the solutions obtained are evaluated and their values in the objectives' space are used to support the Decision Maker (DM) in the choice of his/her preferences in the form of a reference point in the objectives' space. Comparison is done on an illustrative example between the performance of the new algorithm proposed and SPEA algorithm (Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm). The computational complexity of a single iteration of proposed algorithm is proved to be polynomial. © 2011 ACM. Source

A prototype of a Web-based software system for optimization and multiple criteria decision making, applicable to business, research and learning purposes is presented. The system facilitates the construction of mathematical models and the solution of some popular real optimization and decision making problems. It has user friendly interface designed for different groups of users. The system software is accessible from anywhere by means of a standard browser and an Internet connection. © 2011 ACM. Source
