Objective: To study the chemical constituents of Yao medicine Zhongliuteng, the canes of Pileostegia tomentella. Methods: The chemical constituents were isolated and purified by silica gel chromatography repeatedly from the canes of P. tomentella and their structures were identified by spectral analysis and chemical methods. Results: Sixteen compounds were isolated from the canes of P. tomentella and their structures were identified as loganic acid (1), 4-O-α-L-arabinofuranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (4S)-4-hydroxyl-β-ionone (2), resorcinol (3), daphnin (4), skimmin (5), umbelliferone (6), vogeloside (7), diethyl phthalate (8), secologanin (9), secologanin dimethyl acetal (10), sweroside (11), foliasalacioside B (12), benzyl-O-β-D-apiofuranosyl-(1″→6')-β-D-glucopyranoside (13), maltose (14), glucose (15), and daucosterol (16). Two new triterpenoid glycosides, 3α,19α,23α-trihydroxy-2-oxo-12-ursen-28-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (1) and 3α,19α,23α-trihydroxy-2-oxoolean-12-en-28-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (2) as well as three known compounds, 2α,3α,19α-trihydroxyolean-12-en-28-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (3), 2α,3α,19α,23-tetrahydroxy-12-ursen-28-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (4), and 2α,3β,19α,23-tetrahydroxyurs-12-en-28-oic acid (5) were isolated from 75% EtOH extract of Rosa cymosa. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic methods. All the isolated compounds displayed moderate inhibitory activity against LPS-induced NO production in macrophages. © 2016 Verlag Helvetica Chimica Acta AG, Zürich

Bioassay directed isolation of the EtOAc extract from a traditional Chinese medicine Psoralea corylifolia resulted in the purification of two isoflavonoids, corylifols D (1) and E (2), along with four known ones. The structures of 1 and 2 were determined by extensive 1D and 2D NMR and MS data analyses. When tested against HepG2 and Hep3B hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines, corylifol A (4) displayed IC50 values of 4.6 and 13.5 μg/ml, respectively. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
