Association mapping based on linkage disequilibrium (LD) provides a promising tool to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in plant resources. A total of 141 eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) accessions were selected to detect simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers associated with nine fruit traits. Population structure analysis was performed with 105 SSR markers, which revealed that two subgroups were present in this population. LD analysis exhibited an extensive long-range LD of approximately 11 cM. A total of 49 marker associations related to eight phenotypic traits were identified to involve 24 different markers, although no association was found with the trait of fruit glossiness. To our knowledge, this is the 1st approach to use a genome-wide association study in eggplant with SSR markers. These results suggest that the association analysis approach could be a useful alternative to traditional linkage mapping to detect putative QTLs in eggplant. © FUNPEC-RP.

China is one of the domestication centers for eggplant, and the germplasm resources available for this organism in China are notably rich. In this study, one hundred simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were used to examine the genetic diversity and relationships among 92 eggplant accessions collected from seven areas in China. Analysis of these SSRs revealed a moderate amount of polymorphism with an average polymorphism information content (PIC) value of 0.285. The average value of number of effective loci (Ne), expected heterozygosity (He) and Shannon's Information index (I) were 1.631, 0.323 and 0.570, respectively. The levels of genetic diversity observed in the seven areas were not evenly distributed and decreased from south to north. The F-statistics for these populations showed medium genetic differentiation (Fst. =. 0.129) and considerable gene flow (Nm. =. 2.230). The neighbor-joining (NJ) cluster analysis divided the seven areas into four clades that largely corresponded to geographic divisions. Population structure analysis resulted in two subgroups that generally fit with previous classification scheme. The results will be useful for eggplant germplasm management and will lead to more efficient use of germplasm in eggplant breeding. © 2013 .

Transgenic photo-thermo sensitive genic male sterility Oryza sativa L. cv. "261S" plants with the anti-Waxy gene were successfully obtained using an Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated co-transformation method. Marker-free homozygous transgenic lines with the anti-Waxy gene were obtained. The setting seed rates of the transgenic plants via self-pollination or via crossing with the restorer line WX99075 rice and the 1000-grain weight of the transgenic plants and the F2 hybrid seeds obtained by crossing the transgenic or nontransgenic plants with the restorer line WX99075 rice, and the number of panicles of the transgenic plants and yields of the F2 hybrid rice, were analysed. Quality indexes of the transgenic plants and of the F2 hybrid seeds were analysed. Our researches results indicate that hybrid female and hybrid descendant edibility could be improved via the introduction of the anti-Waxy gene, but the grain yields of the reserve seeds via selfpollination of the transgenic photo-thermo sensitive genic sterile lines and of the hybrid rice were not affected.
