The economy of production processes is linked up to continuous developments of manufacturing processes. After the heat treatment in the process chain of Aluminium vacuum die casting components dimensional and shape changes occur, which require straightening operations. Influencing factors on the distortion are complex and mechanisms commonly unknown. By means of a system orientated approach called Distortion Engineering the distortion behaviour along the process chain of an aluminium die casting component has been investigated. Even after optimised batching significant shape deviations have been determined as well after solution annealing as after casting and quenching. On the basis of distortion sensitive process steps and the knowledge of critical component areas, compensation strategies were derived, which might prevent straightening operations at the end of the process chain. © 2012 Carl Hanser Verlag, M+nchen.
