The corrosion protection of the works water pipelines (diameter approx. 6 m) and the low pressure distributor pipeline (diameter up to 8,7 m) of the hydro storage pump power plant Markersbach of Vattenfall Europe Generation AG was modernised in 2007 and 2008. The steel surface to be worked on constituted approx. 50000 m 2. The corrosion protection measure comprised the blasting of the old coating and the creation of the surface preparation level of Sa 2 1/2 and the rebuilding of a 4-layer coating system. Due to the object-specific conditions of approx. 1000 m long works water pipeline with an incline of up to 58 %, the use of a special carriage was necessary for the accomplishment of the works. The creation of suitable climatic conditions for the corrosion protection works was achieved via the intake of dehumidified and pre-heated air. This article describes the accomplishment of the corrosion protection works as well as their quality assurance and discusses the particularities that occurred during the execution of the construction work. © Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co. 2010 saw the renewal of the interior corrosion protection of the water container of the historic Groitzsch Water Tower, built in 1903/1904. The massive corrosion damage incurred in the period and the occasionally less than professional maintenance work carried out meant that a very poor structural and corrosion protection state existed at many points. This resulted in the necessity to implement structural steel repair measures and the requirement of correspondingly tailored corrosion protection specifications. The implementation of the renovation work is described and measures in the scope of the quality management of the work presented. © Ernst & Sohn;.

The renewal of corrosion protection on older steel structures may take the form of maintenance or complete renewal. A decision regarding this is only possible as a result of a detailed examination of the condition of the structure. Irrespective of the renewal variant chosen, old structures typically place special requirements on the planning and implementation of such measures. On the one hand these are the result of the construction peculiarities, such as those found in rivet construction. On the other hand, increased corrosive stress on the structure during its usage thus far may demand the implementation of separate measures. In the case of a planned implementation the renewal concept should be tested and test areas created on the structure. In the scope of the drafting of the bidding documents an exhaustive description of the work is to be undertaken, including a detailed description of the condition of the existing corrosion protection, to ensure that the bidder can conduct an orderly calculation of his work. © Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co.
