Growing attention is being devoted to ultrafine particles in occupational safety and health. The presence of this particle fraction has therefore been investigated more closely at real welding workplaces. To assess exposure to the various particle size fractions of welding fumes, the established mass-related measurement methods were supplemented with the size-resolved determination of the number concentration of ultrafine particles and their aggregates and agglomerates at selected welding workplaces. One of the aims of the project was to determine the extent to which the different measuring methods affect the assessment of the measurement results. It was shown that high mass concentrations do not necessarily correlate with high total number concentrations. Nevertheless, the dependence of mean particle size on mass concentration was demonstrated. This means that attention must be given to the particle size distribution as a further important variable when measuring ultrafine particles in welding fumes. Source
