In order for information to be obtained on antigen concentrations at refuse collection workplaces and to permit conclusions regarding the relationship to the cultivatable fungi, the inhalable dust, endotoxin and various fungi and mite antigens were quantified by measurements conducted on the collection personnel and in the vicinity of the refuse vehicle's loading equipment, parallel to quantification of the cultivatable fungi. The inhalable dust value lay substantially below the occupational exposure limit. Certain fungi that were detected frequently and in some cases in high concentrations following cultivation, such as Aspergillus fumigatus and Penicillium spp., exceeded the detection limits of the immunological assays substantially less frequently. By contrast, antigens of the genera Cladosporium and Eurotium were detected more frequently than were these genera of fungi following cultivation. Altogether, antigen detection correlated poorly with cultivation of the same genera of fungi, β-1,3-Clucan and endotoxin were detected in all samples and correlated significantly with the overall fungal load. The concentration of mite antigens during refuse collection approximated that in the domestic environment.

Growing attention is being devoted to ultrafine particles in occupational safety and health. The presence of this particle fraction has therefore been investigated more closely at real welding workplaces. To assess exposure to the various particle size fractions of welding fumes, the established mass-related measurement methods were supplemented with the size-resolved determination of the number concentration of ultrafine particles and their aggregates and agglomerates at selected welding workplaces. One of the aims of the project was to determine the extent to which the different measuring methods affect the assessment of the measurement results. It was shown that high mass concentrations do not necessarily correlate with high total number concentrations. Nevertheless, the dependence of mean particle size on mass concentration was demonstrated. This means that attention must be given to the particle size distribution as a further important variable when measuring ultrafine particles in welding fumes.

Naphthalene contamination - Tar smell bites schoolboy's noses - poison alarm in the tax office. In the same or similar manner the headlines run in the media, if in schools or administrative buildings discomfort upon annoying smells is expressed, accompanied by symptoms like headaches, burning eyes or respiratory tract irritation. "Fresh, clean air" is a sign for perceived air quality. The perception of a smell is often interpreted as an indicator for air pollution and connected with the worry about noxious effects. Appropriate media reports support the affected persons in their worry. The question is: Does it smell only or is it also noxious? In this article, the perception of odors and their possible meaning for the development of health complaints is explained.
