Suicide is a multilayered event to which adverse workplace conditions and high job-strain may contribute. Occupations with easy access to means of suicide as well as with a high stress level are at higher risk for suicide compared to the general population, among them physicians and nurses, farmers, law enforcement officers, military personnel and banker. Suicide prevention programmes at the workplace consist of the following components: education and training for employers and managers, support of a social networking among the employers, cooperation of internal and external resources, screening programmes for high risk individuals, support of help-seeking behavior and restricted access to means. Further research is needed to understand occupation specific risk factors and to develop preventions programmes which can be implemented in the working environment. © 2016 Georg Thieme Verlag KG.Stuttgart.
