This article introduces the load-bearing structure of the museum for urban history in Hanoi (Vietnam) which is based on the architecture design presented by von Gerkan, Marg and Partner (gmp international GmbH). Based on the modern architecture of the building this report gives a comprehensive overview on the highly sophisticated structural design also outlining the local conditions in terms of execution quality and building durability.


In the framework of the German-Timorese financial cooperation in the maritime sector, the Timorese Minister of Transport has launched a tender for the elaboration of a feasibility study for an additional ferry link in the island state. The aim of the new ferry link is to foster the economic development of Timor-Leste as well as to improve the living conditions of the Timorese population. As a complement to the already existing ferry link between Dili, the enclave of Oecussi on the north west coast of the island and the Ataúro Island, the feasibility study comprises a concept for a new ferry link between the north and south coast of Timor-Leste. The study covers the technical and economic feasibility of the new ferry link, the identification of potential ferry landing sites along the route as well as the conceptual design of the ferry. The effect of a single-peaked flood wave on pier scour is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The conditions considered involve clear-water scour of a cohesionless material of given median sediment size and sediment nonuniformity, an approach flow characterized by a flow depth and velocity, a circular-shaped cylindrical bridge pier, and a flood hydrograph defined by its time to peak and peak discharge. A previously proposed formula for scour advance under a constant discharge was applied to the unsteady approach flow. The generalized temporal scour development along with the end scour depth are presented in terms of mainly the densimetric particle Froude number based on the maximum approach flow velocity and the median sediment size. The effect of the remaining parameters on the end scour depth is discussed and predictions are demonstrated to be essentially in agreement with model observations. © 2010 ASCE.

During the flood of August 2002 the Eastern Ore Mountains was one of the main areas of damage. On the basis of the Saxonlan flood prevention concept for the river Rote Weißeritz and subsequent studies the State Reservoir Administration of Saxony planned a flood retarding basin within the Pöbelbach Valley. This flood protection project is implemented at the moment. The engineering work is classified as large basin according to DIN 19 700-12 and is designed as ecological permeable green basin. The barrier consists of a rockfill dam with asphaltic concrete core. The river Pobelbach is lead through the dam by an ecological passage. State road number S183 remains within the reservoir and is routed through the dam by a tunnel consisting of reinforced concrete.


The following report is concerned with the implemented planning works regarding the future development and extension of Klaipeda Sea Port. A sustainable development of the existing port facilities as well as its extension will be required to meet the demanding and highly competitive challenges of global trade and the growing flow of commodities. This port development project comprises the aspects of the development of the existing port infrastructure and superstructure as well as suggestions for the improvement of the general competitiveness and the port administration. The possibilities of the territorial development of Klaipeda Port are limited to the adjacent city area as well as the adjacent natural protection area. Besides the optimization of the existing port facilities, various port locations at the Baltic Sea coast of Lithuania had to be evaluated concerning the external port development. For the most suitable alternatives the technical development plans had to be developed, the financial-economic evaluation had to be implemented as well as the required environmental approvals had to be obtained. Based on the dynamic economic growth in SE Asia and especially Vietnam's export-oriented industrial sector, there are massive ongoing investments in port and maritime infrastructure. Thus, the development of the deep-water port at Cai Mep, designed for super-post-panamax container vessels up to 400 m length, is a core project in this development. Due to the vessel size and subsoil conditions, special requirements within design and during execution under local conditions must be considered for the quay structure. The following explanations show, how the load bearing system of the gallery in the town hall of Cottbus could be adjusted to new requirements of utilization by local reinforcements of the gallery's principal girders and load redistribution. Besides this example demonstrates that an approximate 100 year old reinforce concrete construction can be efficiently improved by elementary measures and in line with the regulations of historic monument protection. © 2013 Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co. The coast of Togo at the Gulf of Guinea, situated in West Africa is not sheltered by natural protection, such as offshore islands or rocky shorelines. The approximately 65 km long Atlantic Ocean coastline does mainly consist of sand, which is prone to erosion due to wave attacks and the prevailing west-east current. With a traditionally dense populated coast, the land losses caused by erosion constitute a main issue for the Togolese as well as for the infrastructure in general. The problems caused by erosion are therefore vigorously pursued by the Togolese Government. Greater Lomé, located at the coast, accommodates 2,5 Million of the 6 to 7 Million Togolese people. The construction of additional and maintaining of existing groins would stabilize Togo's coastline. The article describes the technical implementation of coastal protection measures designed and supervised by INROS LACKNER AG.
