A review was presented on the applications of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis in Chinese rare earth industry during the last 20 years. The application consisted of the analysis of rare earth elements in ores and soil, concentrates, compounds, metals, alloys, functional materials, fast and online analysis in separation process, and so on. The analytical method was described on pressed powders, fused beads, liquid thin films and solid pieces. The detections of rare earth elements and compounds were concerned in iron and steel, nonferrous metals, petrochemical, geology, biology, electronic materials and other fields. © 2010 The Chinese Society of Rare Earths.

Adding Gd and Ho to Nd-Fe-B alloys can promote the growth of Nd2Fe14B columnar crystal, result in an u-niform distribution of Nd-rich phase, and refine the grain size of the magnet. Ho can improve the intrinsic coercivity, Gd can enhance the square degrees of the demagnetization curve, but the remanence and magnetic energy product will be lower. Moreover, Gd and Ho can reduce the open flux irreversible loss, and make magnets with better thermostability.

Nd-Fe-B alloy films were fabricated by SC process, the microstructure and magnetic properties of the sintered Nd-Fe-B magnets with addition of Dy and Nb have been studied, and the best content of Dy and Nb was determined. The microstructure and magnetic properties of the magnets were analyzed and measured with the scanning electron microscope and NIM-10000 system, respectively. The results show that addition of Dy resulted in uniformly distributed, fined grained and regularly shaped microstructures and made Hcj increase significantly without reducing remanence obviously. Addition of Nb can increase Hcj, and decrease irreversible loss of flux. As a result, the magnetic properties at higher temperature are improved.
