The exposure to chemically-aggressive media causes a structural modification of wooden members. The related mechanisms are called wood corrosion. The subject of the studies was an approximately 100 year's old warehouse, which was executed as HETZER-construction and has been used as storage for potassium salt. The assessment of the degree of modification and the evaluation of the strength reduction was the aim of the studies. Test on the strength as well as chemical analyses have been carried out. The results showed a clearly visible modification of the examined material due to the exposure to the salts. This was recognizable by the superficial macroscopic modifications as well as by a reduction in the strength of the material in the periphery of the cross-section.

This paper describes investigations to determine the strength of false acacia wood. At present, this kind of very durable timber can not get used in building practice, because there are no rules in the German timber design codes. The results permit a classification in the strength classes D50 to D70 according to the Timber design Code DIN 1052:2008, Table F.7 or to the European standard EN 338:2010. Since 1930 in Germany are manufactured trusses made of boards or planks and nail joints in lengths up to 30 m. Due to their efficiency, they were very often used in the days when an economical use of building materials was economically important. Existing indoor structures with nail trusses can now continue to be used without restriction if they are subjected to prior to implementation and continued use of a specialized construction stage analysis. The article deals with the issues of analysis of building condition and the elimination of typical construction defects and structural damages. Corpus of damage and construction defects can, as the examples show, are usually eliminated with simple craft methods. Studies on the timber corrosion of historic glued laminated timber This article presents studies on historic glued laminated timber with special reference to the effect of chemically aggressive media. Subject of the investigation was an almost 100 year old salt warehouse in Hetzer's construction method. Strength tests in the dynstat-procedure as well as chemical investigations on the salinity were carried out. Studies on the strength of the adhesive joints of historic glued laminated timber This paper presents a study on the strength of casein glue layers of glulam timber in Hetzer's construction method. Nowadays casein adhesive joints are only appearing in maintenance of historic glulam structures. An evaluation of the results according to DIN EN 392:1996 proved unsuitable, as this standard relates to modern, synthetic resins based adhesive systems. Therefore earlier publications on the strength of casein glue respectively regulations for wooden aircrafts from the 1950s were utilized in order to be able to assess these kind of adhesive joints. The results of this study revealed, that the casein adhesive joint has an relatively high loading capacity and durability even after 100 years especially under interaction of moisture and chemically aggressive media. © 2013 Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co.
