The forthcoming introduction of the new traffic loads adds a high degree of complexity to the verification, which does not appear necessary according to the experience gained to date. Moreover, the planned changes are so significant that an extended trial phase appears useful. The option of performing computer-based comparative calculations using different programs would be desirable because the manual verification is very time-consuming.


Life is getting ever more complex. Unfortunately, this also applies to the new version of DWA-A 161. However, this revised edition does not only provide additional considerations to be included in the structural analysis; it also includes guidance with respect to situations that had previously been neglected, such as jacking beyond unconsolidated soil, the calculation of loads acting in longitudinal direction in the case of curved jacking, and the long overdue consideration of both material and geometry involved in the transfer of pressure. On the other hand, the provisions for smaller pipe tolerances or steering movements (controlled by joint measurements) prove to be beneficial because of the greater jacking forces that can be applied. However, all parties involved in the project must deal with the structural characteristics of the pipeline. It is not sufficient to just send a DVD with the tender documents to the structural engineer without any comment.

The new load assumptions for traffic loads are becoming more and more complex and result - with the exception of air traffic loads - in notably higher loadings for pipes, particularly for lower backfill covers. The effect this will have in practice remains to be seen.
