The invention provides the use of an overbased metal detergent in which two or more different surfactant groups, one being a hydrocarbyl-substituted hydroxybenzoate and another being a sulfonate group, are incorporated therein during its overbasing, and which has been manufactured in the presence of at least one amide-or ester-based co-surfactant, said use being as an additive in a motor vehicle lubricating oil composition to provide lubricant frictional benefits, exemplified by improved high frequency reciprocating rig performance thereof, and/or improved stability of the overbased detergent in the composition in comparison with an analogous lubricating oil compositions made by admixing said overbased metal detergent and said at least one amide-or ester-based co-surfactant.

A lubricating oil composition which comprises or is made by admixing:(A) an oil of lubricating viscosity, in a major amount;(B) at least one oil-soluble or oil-dispersible sulfurized fatty acid ester, as an additive in an amount providing the lubricating oil composition with greater than or equal to 0.02 mass % sulphur;and,(C) at least one oil-soluble or oil-dispersible alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salicylate detergent, as an additive in an effective minor amount, providing greater than or equal to 5 mmol of salicylate soap per kilogram of the lubricating oil composition,wherein the lubricating oil composition does not comprise a phosphorus ester additive.

A viscosity index improver containing, in diluent oil, one or more optionally functionalized linear block copolymers having at least one block derived from alkenyl arene covalently linked to at least one block derived from diene in an amount that is greater than the critical overlap concentration (c_(h)^(*)), in mass%, for the linear block copolymers in the diluent oil; and ester base stock and/or at least one star (or radial) polymer, the star polymer being present in an amount such that the c/c_(h)^(*) value of the star polymer in the concentrate falls within the range of from 0.01 to about 1.6, wherein c is the concentration in mass% of star polymer in the concentrate and c_(h)^(*) is the critical overlap concentration in mass% for the star polymer in the diluent oil used to form the concentrate.


A vehicle transmission incorporating a wet clutch, said clutch being lubricated by a transmission fluid containing a major amount of a lubricating oil and a minor amount of an additive composition including:(i) a compound of structure (I):(ii) a friction modifier; and(iii) an oil-soluble phosphorus compound.

An additive package for a two- or four-stroke marine engine lubricant comprises an oil of lubricating viscosity, a salicylate detergent and a sulfonate detergent in a ratio of 90/10 to 10/90 (expressed as mmol of soap), and 1 to 10 mass % of a hydrocarbylphenol-aldehyde condensate.


A lubricant additive concentrate having a kinematic viscosity of from about 40 to about 300 cSt at 100C, containing a dispersant-detergent colloid mixture, including a polybutenyl succinimide dispersant that is the reaction product of a polyamine and polybutenyl succinic anhydride (PIBSA) derived from polybutene having a number average molecular weight (M_(n)) of from about 1300 to about 2500 and a terminal vinylidene content of at least about 65%, and succinic and/or maleic anhydride via an ene maleation process, the PIBSA having a succinic anhydride (SA) functionality (F) of greater than 1.7 and less than about 2.5; and a detergent colloid including overbased detergent having a total base number (TBN) of from about 370 to about 1000 mg KOH/g derived from one or more surfactants selected from (i) sulfonate; (ii) phenate; and (iii) carboxylate surfactant; in which the mass ratio of the dispersant to the overbased detergent colloid in the concentrate is from about 0.5 to about 5.0; and the dispersant and overbased colloidal together constitute at least 28 mass%, of the concentrate.


A lubricant additive concentrate containing (i) dispersant that is the polybutenyl succinimide reaction product of a polyamine and polybutenyl succinic anhydride (PIBSA) derived from polybutene having a number average molecular weight (M_(n)) of from 1300 to 2500 daltons and a terminal vinylidene content of at least 50% and maleic anhydride via an ene maleation process; (ii) overbased magnesium colloidal detergent having a total base number (TBN) of from 300 to 900 mg KOH/g; and (iii) organic friction modifier selected from hydroxyalkyl alkyl amines of C_(14) to C_(24) hydrocarbons, at least one hydroxyalkyl alkyl ether amines of C_(13) to C_(24) hydrocarbons, at least one alkyl ester amine derived from triethanol amine having a C_(13) to C_(24) hydrocarbyl substituent, at least one non-basic, fatty acid amide, or a mixture thereof; wherein the combined mass% of dispersant (i) and overbased magnesium colloidal detergent (ii) in said concentrate is from 15 to 50 mass%: the mass ratio of (i):(ii) is from 1:1 to 6:1; and the concentrate contains from 2 to 10 mass% of organic friction modifier (iii); the remainder of the concentrate being composed of base oil and additives other than dispersant (i), overbased magnesium colloidal detergent (ii) and organic friction modifier (iii).

The composition includes a detergent additive which comprises either: an oil-soluble sulfonate including both magnesium and calcium as cations; or an oil-soluble salicylate including both magnesium and calcium as cations.
