Polyaniline (PANI) in fractal dimension has been electrodeposited reproducibly on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) from 0.2 M aniline in 1 M aqueous HCl solution by potentiodynamic sweeping in the range of -0.2 to 0.76 V vs Ag/AgCl at room temperature. Fractal growth of PANI dendrimers is affected by diffusion limited polymerization (DLP) at a sweep rate of 15 mV s -1 for 43 min. This type of PANI dendrimer is prepared for the first time on such large area HOPG substrate by electrochemical technique using rather simple cell setup. The fractal dimension has been determined by chronoamperometry (CA) and box counting technique and is found to vary from 1.4 to 1.9 with the duration of electropolymerization. The sweep rate, terminal oxidation potential, and the diverse surface anisotropy of the HOPG surface are found to be crucial factors in controlling the growth of such PANI fractals. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

Diethyl carbonate, an efficient oxygen-containing fuel additive was synthesized from dimethyl carbonate and ethanol using KF/Al2O 3. The catalysts prepared with different KF loading were characterized using X-ray diffraction, BET surface area and basicity measurement analyses. The effects of different reaction parameters such as temperature, reactant ratio and amount of catalyst were optimized. Among the different alkali halides, 20 wt.% KF supported on alumina exhibited 61.6% diethyl carbonate selectivity with 96% dimethyl carbonate conversion under optimum reaction conditions. The plausible reaction mechanism is proposed based on the results obtained. The possibility of recycling the catalyst was ensured without appreciable loss in activity for four cycles. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The copper (I)-catalyzed direct synthesis of imines from amines under mild aerobic conditions is described. The method is applicable for the synthesis of various imines from corresponding amines such as benzylic, aliphatic, cyclic secondary, heteroaromatic species and the oxidative condensation of benzylamines with anilines extends the scope of the CuCl catalytic system. Four mixed ligand coordination polymers [Co(BrIP)(4-BPMP) 1.5·H2O]n (1), [{Zn2(BrIP) 2 (HBrIP)(H3-BPMP)}·4H2O]n (2), [{Co(SDB)(3-BPMP)}·(C4H8O)·H 2O]n (3) and [{Co(SDB)(4-BPMP)}·2H 2O]n (4) (where 4-BPMP = 1,4-bis(4-pyridylmethyl) piperazine, 3-BPMP = 1,4-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)piperazine, H2BrIP = 5-bromoisophthalic acid, and H2SDB = 4,4′-sulfonyldibenzoic acid) have been synthesized by solvothermal methods. Crystal structure of 1 revealed that 4-BPMP ligands (present in different conformations) in conjunction with BrIP and metal nodes engender an interpenetrated two-dimensional (2D) grid-type network. Compound 2 comprises of one-dimensional metal organic ladder patterns with pendent carboxylic acid sites on HBrIP moieties. Coordination polymers 3 and 4 exhibit [Co2(SDB)2]n double chain loops containing "paddle-wheel" secondary building units tethered by 3-BPMP and 4-BPMP respectively, generating (4,4) grid-type 2D nets. Comprehensive characterization, structural analysis, and photoluminescence behavior of 1-4 are discussed. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Metal-center-driven spontaneous resolution of a chiral coordination polymer, [Ni(SDB)(BIX)]n (1), from achiral precursors has been probed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and circular dichroism spectroscopy. Enantiomorphs 1P and 1M showed a parallel interpenetrated 2D → 3D chiral framework with (82.10) topology. Switching of the metal center under the same reaction parameters resulted in isostructural achiral and noninterpenetrating (4,4) grid-type sql networks [M(SDB)(BIX)]n, where M = CoII, ZnII, and CdII for 2-4, respectively. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

A marine bacterial strain identified as Vibrio parahaemolyticus by 16S rRNA gene (HM355955) sequencing and gas chromatography (GC) coupled with MIDI was selected from a natural biofilm by its capability to produce extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The EPS had an average molecule size of 15.278 μm and exhibited characteristic diffraction peaks at 5.985°, 9.150° and 22.823°, with d-spacings of 14.76661, 9.29989 and 3.89650 Å, respectively. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectrum revealed aliphatic methyl, primary amine, halide groups, uronic acid and saccharides. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) confirmed the presence of arabinose, galactose, glucose and mannose. (1)HNMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) revealed functional groups characteristic of polysaccharides. The EPS were amorphous in nature (CI(xrd) 0.092), with a 67.37% emulsifying activity, thermostable up to 250°C and displayed pseudoplastic rheology. MALDI-TOF-TOF analysis revealed a series of masses, exhibiting low-mass peaks (m/z) corresponding to oligosaccharides and higher-mass peaks for polysaccharides consisting of different ratios of pentose and hexose moieties. This is the first report of a detailed characterisation of the EPS produced by V. parahaemolyticus, which could be further explored for biotechnological and industrial use.

We report a simple method for the preparation of anion conductive ionomers (ACIs) using chloromethylated bisphenol A, without the use of chloromethyl methyl ether (CMME) (carcinogenic). Aminated multi-block poly(arylene ether)s (AMBPEs) were obtained by nucleophilic aromatic substitution, followed by polymer condensation then amination. The reported ACIs exhibited a 2.74 milliequivalent per g ion-exchange capacity (IEC) and hydroxide ion conductivity of 56 mS cm-1. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

It is observed that conglomerate crystallization of achiral precursors yielding racemate metal organic frameworks/coordination polymers (MOFs/CPs) can be driven to absolute homochiral crystallization of the desired enantiomorph by utilizing a suitable chiral induction agent. In a series of crystallization experiments isostructural Zn and Co homochiral CPs (1P, 1M and 2P, 2M) are prepared using the achiral precursors. In the presence of enantiopure camphoric acid, the crystallization process prefers absolute chiral induction over conglomerate formation which is established by single crystal X-ray diffraction and CD spectroscopy. © 2013 American Chemical Society.
