This paper aims at demonstrating the biocompatibility of recently developed 3D hydrogel scaffolds containing the same amount of collagen (COLL) and variable concentrations of sericin (SS) in order to find the most suitable formula for adipose tissue engineering (ATE) applications. These scaffolds were obtained by COLL crosslinking with glutaraldehyde followed by freeze-drying and, subsequently, seeded with 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Scanning electron microscopy studies revealed the scaffolds' architecture and cellular colonization. Also, in vitro biocompatibility of the developed scaffolds was evaluated by LDH and MTT assays and Live/Dead analysis of 3T3-L1 preadipocyte populating these 3D matrices. The best results in terms of cell survival and proliferation status were obtained in the case of the hybrid COLL scaffold containing 40% SS (COLL-SS4). Furthermore, the biological performance of the analyzed COLL-based hydrogels at 5- and 8- days post-seeding was found to decrease as follows: COLL-SS4>COLL-SS2>COLL>COLL-SS6. Consequently, our study highlights that hybrid scaffolds obtained by the addition of variable concentrations of SS to a constant COLL composition positively influences the behavior of 3T3-L1 cells with the exception of the COLL-SS6 matrix (60% SS). Altogether, the data obtained recommend SS as a component of COLL-based hydrogels providing them with features that may be useful in ATE applications. © 2015 Chinese Materials Research Society.

Orthopedic footwear is part of the category of medical devices used in the conservative treatment of foot and lower limbs pathomechanics. For the custom-made medical device the manufacturer has to perform the design based on the prescription of a duly qualified medical practitioner that sets the specific design characteristics of the device. Quality management standards in the field of medical devices govern the entire process (or parts thereof) from design and development to delivery and provide technical support for their implementation. In this respect, the prescription is constituted as an input, respectively an essential requirement of the design process and must be complete and unambiguous. This paper aims to analyse aspects of medical prescription as an essential requirement of the design and manufacturing process of custom-made orthopedic footwear. © 2017 by the author(s).

All around us, due to advancing technology, evolve faster than ever before. Nothing has rocked the way in which companies do business as the emergence of the Internet. Market forces, conducted by the speed of communications that is facilitated by electronic networks, are making product life cycles shorter and shorter. Customer needs and tastes change rapidly. Product inventories are always in danger of becoming obsolete. To counter this tendency, organizations are increasing their expertise and efficiencies in the process of designing and producing new products and in the process of delivering and servicing existing products. Companies that develop higher skill levels in these areas are clearly better able to ride the waves of change and profit from developments in the markets they serve. The processes involved in the designing, building, and delivering of products to the customers that need them have come to be collectively referred to as supply chain management. Electronic management of business supply chains coordinates all business partners in the supply chain over electronic networks and gives all parties an up-to-the-minute overview of all available inventories. Due to the numerous challenges and difficulties that firms face in present's rapidly changing business environment, establishing an effective supply chain is becoming a core competency for many organisations. Effective supply chain management is no longer an option; it is a requirement for survival. Companies within the supply chain must reach new levels of communication and cooperation.

The art of costumes, made of textile or animal origin fibres, is one of the oldest cultural technologies of humanity, integrated in both the public and the domestic spaces of life. The artistic and cultural imaginary, predominantly feminine, has found an ideal place of expression, because the tradition of social and cultural praxis has a millenary individuality and continuity. In the creative interior of this equally artistic and technological area, the cultural identity of the product is defined by the cultural archetype or pattern which transcends the primary message and reveals, through the symbolic qualities of decorative elements and of ancient artistic techniques, a whole specific universe. Following the scientific line of CG Jung in defining the archetype, but also the philosophy of Mircea Eliade, who said that "symbol, myth, archetypal image are related to the substance of spiritual life, that we can hide, mutilate and degrade them, but never remove them", the paper proposes to decode that Romanian archetypal syntax, defined by elements of symbolic anthropology, which make up the traditional costume. Analyzing cultural archetypes and patterns which define Romanian spirituality, expressed through symbolic elements and motifs of garb with ritual role, the paper will highlight elements of symbolic anthropology expressed through avant-garde concepts of modern product design. Thus, the paper will argument the thesis that cultural identity sells any product, provided that the authentic intrinsic cultural value is respected, defined and promoted, because the European cultural economy is not only a desideratum and a top strategy, it is also a dynamic multicultural reality directed towards sustainability of heritage values.

Accessories are created in order to express the wearer's personality, to emphasize certain features, while toning down others; by means of accessories, shapes recombine endlessly, thus giving way to new possibilities to be highlighted as sources of show. Accessories, much like other footwear components, are able to provide industrial customers with clear and practical solutions regarding fashion forecasting 18 to 24 months in advance. These will be the starting point for their implementation in the footwear industry. Aesthetics, as shape and perception of accessories, which by means of their structure, material and last, but not least, their design and cutting-edge technology, give strength and visual impact according to the latest fashion trends. Contrary to studies on the chemicals used in leather processing and treatment in relation to foot hygiene, accessories respond through their degree of destructibility and the aesthetics, which is ephemeral anyway. Metals which may cause inconveniences to some, may be beneficial for others, just the same as semiprecious or precious stones are not compatible to each individual. Fashion, in its high complexity, highlights the social environment where the individual moves. This study presents several themes in fashion accessories for footwear and leather goods.

This research highlights the possibility of individual treatment of baths resulting from processes prior to leather tanning for controlled capture of organic substances using mineral complex made by chemical modification of red mud, waste from the production of alumina from bauxite, using the Bayer process. Experiments have demonstrated the capacity of the mineral complex, obtained by chemical modification of red mud, to retain organic substances from wastewater. By treating the residual baths from operations prior to leather tanning with the red mud based mineral complex, chemical oxygen demand of residual baths can be reduced by about 85%. The transfer of organic substances into the mineral complex is simple, effective and reproducible and does not cause particular problems in terms of toxicology and occupational safety.

The degree of civilization for a people emerges out of the everyday life of its individuals, their way of dressing, dwelling, feeding, learning, living within a community, etc. "Everyday life" refers to the in actu civilization, that is, those civilization manifestations found in the everyday life of a human community, and the manner in which potential civilization facts (techniques and objects, all kinds of knowledge, social and moral rules) are converted into actual civilization facts. In this context, researching and outlining a history of footwear may be an act of knowledge in itself, but it can also be an addition to the history of the Romanian civilization. Romanian history sources, in terms of both arts and literature, and historiography and archeological sites, are poor and inadequate, particularly those regarding the old history of footwear. The paper presents a short history of footwear, from the late Paleolithic to the early Middle Age, on the Romanian territory of today. Both the material vestiges certifying leather processing and shoe making on the Romanian territory, and the Romanian linguistic treasure have equally revealed the millenary continuity of some trades, alongside the continuity of the Romanian people in the hearth of its Geto-Dacian ancestors.

The cultural model expressed in haute-couture fashion, from the perspective of the author of the fashion product, is an artistic spectacle it itself, based on a philosophy of the culture of the moment at society level and on individual accumulation of culture. It becomes a successful media show if the whole collection of prototypes has managed to transpose, almost mathematically, the entire creative and cultural process of the author. The paper presents an analysis of relationships between the cultural concepts of the moment, area and technological style approached overtime in footwear manufacturing, in order to demonstrate the role of the artistic concept of the product in the continuity of human culture. In the millennial history of footwear, sizes, materials, motifs, ornaments and colours have used symbols of national cultures, strictly related to artistic and religious values or to social status, and in the modern world history, cultural influences expressed through the fashion product were due to the socio-cultural, socio-economic and socio-ecological pressures of groups of people. Thus, in the 20th century, diversity of models and their quick transformations have constituted an aesthetic response of a socio-cultural dynamics. Once more it is proven that fashion is a mirror of the way people have lived, thought and were influenced by their natural environment and by society; in the 21st century, postmodern culture majorly influences lifestyles, attempting a modern adaptation of the individual to the universe.

Superporous materials based on two proteins, collagen and sericin were synthesized by freeze-drying considering various ratios between the two proteins. To evaluate the influence of sericin content on the structure/properties relationship, the obtained scaffolds were further characterized using spectroscopic analysis, thermal, and mechanical techniques. Scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the morphological structure of the scaffolds and the swelling properties as well as the stability of the scaffolds were also assessed. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
