The reference temperature localizing the fracture toughness temperature diagram on temperature axis was predicted based on tensile test data. Regularization neural network was developed to solve the correlation of these properties. Three-point bend specimens were applied to determine fracture toughness. The fracture toughness transition dependence was quantified by means of master curve concept enabling to represent it using one parameter, i.e. reference temperature. The reference temperature was calculated applying the multi-temperature method. Different strength and deformation characteristics and parameters were determined from standard tensile specimens focusing on data from localized deformation during specimen necking. Tensile samples with circumferential notch were also examined. In total 29 data sets from low-alloy steels were applied for the analyses. A good correlation of predicted and experimentally determined values of reference temperature was found.

The mechanism of γ-αFe transformation and its impact on the morphological characteristics and basic mechanical properties of the ferritic steel is discussed. It is proposed to merge the categories: Widmanstätten ferrite, coarse acicular ferrite and both upper bainites into the new 'Widmanstätten bainite' category. Change of the category name of acicular ferrite into 'intragranular bainite' is suggested. © OldSoft, 2013.

Knowledge of mechanisms and governing parameters of various modes of damage to structural materials is very important in numerous aspects of practical physical metallurgy-steel production, manufacture of welded joints with required properties, or identification of damage causes in industrial accidents. The apparently simple task of finding a literature source with clear physical-metallurgical interpretation of the reasons for BDT (brittle-to-ductile transition) in steel and other body-centered cubic metals was found to be quite an intricate problem, since an unequivocal and comprehensive theoretical concept of BDT is still missing. Based on the main results of a literature survey a. phenomenological explanation of the existence of BDT is presented. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
