A seat device operatively connected to an HVAC apparatus is provided. The seat device includes the HVAC apparatus to adjust the indoor air within a vehicle. A seat blower is mounted on a seat to blow indoor air, introduced through an inlet thereof, to a seat cushion and a seat back. A connecting duct allows airflow between the seat blower and the HVAC apparatus and a mesh frame connects a circumferential edge of the inlet of the seat blower with the connecting duct to allow ventilation therethrough.

Power generation using a novel configuration of a 1-10 W micro-thermophotovoltaic (micro-TPV) device is studied experimentally. A micro-emitter as a thermal heat source is a simple cylinder with an annular-type shield that applies a heat-recirculation concept and an expanded exhaust outlet that facilitates ignition, which provides stable burning in the small confinement and uniform distribution of temperature along the wall. The micro-emitter is surrounded by a chamber with cooling fins, the inner wall of which has an installation of gallium antimonide photovoltaic cells (PVCs). The performance of the micro-TPV device is most favorable at reduced length of the cooling fins unless the temperature on the PVCs is higher than the operating limit temperature for the GaSb cells. The relative position of the micro-emitter to the PVCs also affects the performance of the micro-TPV device. These observations imply that the net amount of heat irradiation onto the PVCs is more dominant than the PVC temperature in determining the TPV performance. Under optimized operating conditions, the micro-TPV device produces 2.4 W with an overall efficiency of 2.1%, indicating that the efficiency up to the PVC surface is 21% at least if a PVC efficiency of 10% at most is assumed. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. The potential of ammonia (NH3)-hydrogen (H2) blends as a carbon-free, green fuel in a 1-10 W micro-thermophotovoltaic (micro-TPV) device is evaluated experimentally. When NH3-H2 blends are used directly (without any modification) in a heat-recirculating micro-TPV configuration that has an installation of gallium antimonide (GaSb) photovoltaic cells and was developed for hydrocarbon fuel, low temperature on the micro-emitter outer surface is observed, generating a secondary flame at the micro-emitter outlet. Thus, the micro-TPV device has been modified to eliminate the secondary flame by enhancing the residence time of fed NH3-H 2-air mixtures and uniform burning: a cyclone adapter for a fuel-air mixture supply system and a helical adapter for the fuel-air mixture upstream of the micro-emitter. Under optimized design and operating conditions, the micro-TPV device produces 5.2 W with an overall efficiency of 2.1% and an emitter efficiency of 37%, indicating the maximum temperature of the micro-emitter outer surface up to 1408 K. Thus, the feasibility of using NH 3-H2 blends in practical micro power-generation devices has been demonstrated, implying the potential of partial NH3 substitution to improve the safety of pure H2 use with no carbon generation. In this paper, the pose estimation method for the satellite GTB (Ground Test Bed) using vision/MEMS IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) integrated system is presented. The GTB for verifying a satellite system on the ground is similar to the mobile robot having thrusters and a reaction wheel as actuators and floating on the floor by compressed air. The EKF (Extended Kalman Filter) is also used for fusion of MEMS IMU and vision system that consists of a single camera and infrared LEDs that is ceiling landmarks. The fusion filter generally utilizes the position of feature points from the image as measurement. However, this method can cause position error due to the bias of MEMS IMU when the camera image is not obtained if the bias is not properly estimated through the filter. Therefore, it is proposed that the fusion method which uses the position of feature points and the velocity of the camera determined from optical flow of feature points. It is verified by experiments that the performance of the proposed method is robust to the bias of IMU compared to the method that uses only the position of feature points. © ICROS 2012.

A seat cushion extension apparatus includes an extension motor supported on a cushion frame, an extension mounting bracket holding an extension cushion such that the extension cushion is displaceable forward and backward on a seat cushion, and a power transmission unit connecting between the extension motor and the extension mounting bracket. The power transmission unit receives power from the extension motor and moves the extension mounting bracket forward and backward. A slide device is coupled with the extension mounting bracket, and supports the extension mounting bracket such that the extension mounting bracket is slidable forward and backward in the cushion frame. The front-back length of the seat cushion can be freely extended, and limitations in the thickness of a cushion pad or the like are removed.

A method and an apparatus for determining a carelessness of a driver may include detecting an object having an impedance substance by capacitive sensors provided in a headrest of a seat of a vehicle, detecting changes in electrostatic capacity by the capacitive sensors, measuring distance values between the object having the impedance substance and the capacitive sensors by using the changes in electrostatic capacity detected by the capacitive sensors, and determining whether the object having the impedance substance may be in a careless state by using the distance values.

A side bolster adjusting apparatus of a seat of a vehicle for guiding a developing direction of a side airbag may include a side airbag developing direction guide plates integrally fixed to a seatback frame to guide a developing direction of the side airbag, side bolster adjusting plates hinged to rear ends of the side airbag developing direction guide plates, an airbag disposed between the side airbag developing direction guide plates and the side bolster adjusting plates to expand and shrink and to adjust positions of the side bolster adjusting plates, and a pneumatic control unit controlling expansion and shrinkage of the airbag.


Automobile seats provide comfort to passengers and play a crucial role of protecting occupants from a car accident. Seats also have many adjustment mechanism systems to provide various sized occupants with comfort and convenience. However, occupants who sit in out-of-position could be more severely injured from an accident. To enhance occupant's safety, precrash seat system is introduced and many different approaches are made to improve performance. Precrash seat system is an active safety system to give occupants warnings or to control the adjustment devices to move to a safer position before the event of car accident. In this study, occupant injury severities at different positions of seat adjustment systems are evaluated to find out safer locations of the seat in advance of studying precrash seat system. Finite element analysis (FEA) of the frontal collision at different seat adjusted positions is conducted using LS-DYNA FEA code and the occupant injury probabilities are evaluated based on the NCAP criteria. It is found that injury probabilities are lower at the midway of the fore-aft travel of the seat and at a less reclined angle of backrest. In addition, the deflated position of pneumatic thigh support provides lower probability of injuries. Copyright © 2013 SAE International and Copyright © 2013 TSAE.
