A class of electromagnetic sources with sinc Schell-model correlations is introduced. The conditions on source parameters guaranteeing that the source generates a physical beam are derived. The evolution behaviors of statistical properties for the electromagnetic stochastic beams generated by this new source on propagating in free space and in atmosphere turbulence are investigated with the help of the weighted superposition method and by numerical simulations. It is demonstrated that the intensity distributions of such beams exhibit unique features on propagating in free space and produce a double-layer flat-top profile of being shape-invariant in the far field. This feature makes this new beam particularly suitable for some special laser processing applications. The influences of the atmosphere turbulence with a non-Kolmogorov power spectrum on statistical properties of the new beams are analyzed in detail. ©2014 Optical Society of America.

The condition under which a product of two cross-spectral densities (CSD) constitutes a valid correlation function is established. The results are obtained for the CSDs of two one-dimensional, scalar Schell-model sources, but can be readily generalized to other situations. It is shown via a number of numerical examples how new source classes of Schell-model type and the beam-like fields they radiate can be designed. © 2014 Optical Society of America.

Current achievements in plant microRNA (miRNA) research area are inspiring. Molecular cloning and functional elucidation have greatly advanced our understanding of this small RNA species. As one of the ultimate goals, many research efforts devoted to draw a comprehensive view of miRNA-mediated gene regulatory networks in plants. Numerous bioinformatics tools competent for network analysis have been available. However, the most important point for network construction is to obtain reliable analytical results based on sufficient experimental data. Here, we introduced a general workflow to retrieve and analyze the desired data sets that serve as the cornerstones for network construction. For the upstream analyses of miRNA genes, the sequence feature of miRNA promoters should be characterized. And, regulatory relationships between transcription factors (TFs) and miRNA genes need to be investigated. For the downstream part, we emphasized that the high-throughput degradome sequencing data were especially useful for genuine miRNA- target pair identification. Functional characterization of the miRNA targets is essential to provide deep biological insights into certain miRNA-mediated pathways. FormiRNAs themselves, studies on their organ- or tissue-specific expression patterns and the mechanism of self-regulation were discussed. Besides, exhaustive literature mining is required to further support or improve the established networks. It is desired that the introduced framework for miRNA-mediated network construction is timely and useful and could inspire more research efforts in the miRNA research area. © The Author 2011. The electromagnetic Schell-model beams whose cross-spectral matrices have elements belonging to different families of functions are considered for the first time. The conditions under which convolution of two degrees of coherence represents a novel legitimate degree of coherence are established for wide-sense statistically stationary Schellmodel beam-like optical fields. Several examples are given to illustrate how convolution can be used for generation of a far field being a modulated version of another one. Practically, the convolutions of the degrees of coherence can be achieved by programming the liquid crystal spatial light modulators. © 2015 Optical Society of America.

We establish a sufficient condition under which the alternation series of cross-spectral densities (CSD) constitutes a valid CSD. Using such a condition, we introduce a novel class of multi-sinc Schell-model sources with circular and Cartesian symmetries. It is demonstrated that far fields produced by the new sources carry interesting characteristics, being adjustable multi-rings and lattice patterns. © 2015 Optical Society of America.

Two stochastic beams with circular and Cartesian symmetry correlations, generated by a recently introduced novel class of multi-sinc Schell-model (MSSM) source, in a linear isotropic random medium is investigated and comparatively analysed with that in free space. It is demonstrated that the spectral density distributions of such beams on propagation in free space and weaker turbulence medium exhibit unique features and produce multi-rings and lattice patterns of being shape-invariant in the far field. They are destroyed when such beams pass in the stronger turbulence medium at sufficiently large distances. The influence of the fractal constant of the atmospheric power spectrum and refractive-index structure constant on the spectral density of beams is analysed in depth. The unique characteristics in the spectral density are shown to occur on random medium propagation, which was not previously known for any other beams. © 2015 Astro Ltd.

A new catalog of microRNA (miRNA) species called mirtrons has been discovered in animals recently, which originate from spliced introns of the gene transcripts. However, only one putative mirtron, osa-MIR1429, has been identified in rice (Oryza sativa). We employed a high-throughput sequencing (HTS) data- and structure-based approach to do a genome-wide search for the mirtron candidate in both Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) and rice. Five and eighteen candidates were discovered in the two plants respectively. To investigate their biological roles, the targets of these mirtrons were predicted and validated based on degradome sequencing data. The result indicates that the mirtrons could guide target cleavages to exert their regulatory roles post-transcriptionally, which needs further experimental validation. © 2012 Meng, Shao.
