The model of 1000 kV transmission line with two sources is established, based on which the secondary arc currents are calculated with EMTP for that with and without the HSGS. It shows that the HSGS is feasible for a shorter line which need not shunt reactor and transposition, generally shorter than 200 km. The grounding resistance of HSGS influences obviously the limiting effect of HSGS, and it should be set at less than 0.5 Ω. Then the phenomenon that the secondary arc current increased after using HSGS with a resistance bigger than 1.5 Ω on sides of the 150 km line is discussed. Simulations are carried out for lines with different length, which shows that, the longer the line with HSGS is, the bigger the secondary arc current and recovery voltage will be.
