Masson pine seedlings were used as subject in a sand culture experiment to study effect of aluminum (Al) stress on rhizosphere pH, organic acid exudation and Al accumulation of masson pine seedlings. Results show that during the growth of masson pine seedlings, rhizosphere pH increased simultaneously with Al concentration rising from 0 to 300 u,mol • L"1, but leveled off when Al concentration exceeded 300 p.mol · L-1. Among the five organic acids ( citric, oxalic, succinic, malic and acetic acids) examined in this experiment, only oxalic and malic acids demonstrated a similar trend, and a positive correlation to rhizosphere pH. The exudation of oxalic and malic acids plays an important role in variation of rhizosphere pH. Besides, once entering masson pine seedlings through their root system, active Al ions accumulated unevenly in the plant as a result of nutrition and transport mechanism and were significantly higher in roots than in stems and leaves. Al accumulation within the seedlings was positively correlated with rhizosphere pH, root exudation of oxalic and malic acids when Al concentration in the soil was under 300 μmol · L-1.

The chemical behavior of aluminum in the acidic soil-root interface of Pinus massoniana Lamb seedlings was investigated by planting them in pots. The Al in soil was fractionated into five operationally defined forms [exchangeable (Alex), carbonate (Ale), oxide (Alox), organic (Alor), and insoluble (Alin) species]. The results showed: 1) coexisted base ions (Ca2+, Mg 2+, K+, Na+) were positively related to Al 3+ tolerance in soil-root interface, and their alleviation followed a decreasing order: Ca2+>Mg2+>K2+≈ Na2+ 2) the contents of total P and N had positive effects on the Al accumulated in the roots; and 3) the organic matter (OM) was positive to the Alor in P. massonian rhizosphere. Besides, soil pH (<5.0) was negatively related to the rhizospheric Alex. Alex concentration was always higher in the rhizosphere than in bulk soil. The accumulated amount of Al absorbed in the plant roots mainly depended on the Alex quantity of the rhizosphere soil. The Alex entered into the roots and gradually complexed with the small organic molecules in root cell wall, mainly accumulated in the roots as Alor species.

To investigate the effect of occlusal reconstruction on blood flow velocity and cerebral oxygen saturation in patients with malocclusion.Thirty-three patients with malocclusion treated with occlusal reconstruction in Department of Stomatology, Medical School of Huzhou Normal College from Feb 2011 to Oct 2013 were enrolled in the study. The systolic peak flow velocity (vs), end-diastolic peak flow (vd) , mean peak flow velocity (vm) of middle cerebral artery and the oxygen saturation (rScO2) in the brain were detected at rest or chewing status by using transcranial Doppler color ultrasonography and near-infrared spectroscopy, respectively.In rest state, vm was significantly increased on 3 months after treatment, while vs and vd were significantly increased on 6 months after treatment and rScO2 were increased on 12 months after treatment (P<0.05). In chewing state, vs, vm, and rScO2 were increased on 3 months after treatment, and vd was increased on 6 months after treatment (P<0.05).Occlusal reconstruction can increase blood flow velocity of middle cerebral artery and cerebral oxygen saturation and improve oxygen supply of the brain in patients with malocclusion.

The present paper deals with a histological study of the blood cells of Bufo Bufo gargarizans in different months: January, March, May, July and October. The methods used are by routine blood smear in Wright stain and observation in vivo. We found that in smears and in vivo two main types of cells of the red cells: mitotic as well as amitotic. While amitotic occurs all the year round, particularly in July, mitosis so far had been seen only in July. It is also found that there are plenty of neutrophils in the blood cells of Bufo Bufo gargarizans, furthermore, the nuclei of these cells are polymorphic, especially in January and March. Meanwhile, the concentration of red cells was lowest in May and highest in January; The concentration of white blood cells was highest in October and lowest in March; As to granulocytes, eosinophils in July and October had higher proportion, while neutrophils and basophils in July; in agranulocytes, mononuclear cells reached the highest value in March, lowest in January, lymphocytes and the maximum value appeared in May, the lowest value appeared in July. Morphological changes of thrombocytes were not obvious.

Lycopene is common in diet and known for its antioxidant activities. However, the impact of lycopene on iron metabolism is poorly investigated. In this study, we hypothesize that lycopene can prevent iron-mediated oxidative stress, proliferation and autophagy in liver and use a rat model of nutritional iron supplementation to confirm its intervention in these defence mechanisms. We found that iron supplementation induced cell proliferation predominantly in non parenchymal cells compared with hepatocytes, but not apoptosis. In addition, iron was accumulated within the hepatic lysosomes where it triggered autophagy as evidenced by the formation of autophagic vesicles detected by LC3-B staining. Iron supplementation also induced morphologic alterations of the mitochondrial membranes probably due to increased lipid peroxidation as indicated by elevated iron and malondialdehyde concentrations in serum and tissues. Lycopene reduced iron-catalyzed lipid peroxidation by decreasing the malondialdehyde level in the liver and colon and enhancing the total superoxide dismutase activities in serum and tissues. The result suggest that lycopene prevents iron-induced oxidative stress, proliferation and autophagy at both biochemical and histological levels due to its potent free radical scavenging and antioxidant properties.

Accumulating evidence has revealed that brain iron concentrations increase with aging, and the choroid plexus (CP) may be at the basis of iron-mediated toxicity and the increase in inflammation and oxidative stress that occurs with aging. The mechanism involves not only hepcidin, the key hormone in iron metabolism, but also iron-related proteins and signaling-transduction molecules, such as IL-6 and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (Stat3). The aim of the present study was to investigate the correlation between the IL-6/Stat3 signaling pathway and hepcidin at the CP in normal aging. Quantitative real time PCR and Western blot were used to determine the alterations in specific mRNA and corresponding protein changes at the CP at ages of 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33 and 36 months in Brown-Norway/Fischer (B-N/F) rats. The results demonstrated that hepcidin mRNA level at the CP kept stable in young rats (from 3 to 18 months), and increased with aging (from 21 to 36 months). The alterations of IL-6/p-Stat3 mRNA and protein expressions in normal aging were in accordance with that of hepcidin mRNA. Our data suggest that IL-6 may regulate hepcidin expression at the CP, upon interaction with the cognate cellular receptor, and through the Stat3 signaling transduction pathway.

To investigate the neuroprotective potential of lycopene on oxidative stress and neurobehavioral abnormalities in rotenone induced Parkinson disease (PD).Forty adult C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into four groups (n = 10): control, lycopene (10 mg/kg body weight, orally), rotenone (3 mg/kg bw, intraperitoneally) and rotenone plus lycopene, which were sacrificed for 5 weeks. The spectrophotometry was used to determine the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in substantia nigra and right striatum. At the same time, the number of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), alpha-synuclein (alpha-SYN) and microtubule-associated protein 3 light chain (LC3-B) positive neurons were estimated by immunohistochemistry. We also examined neurobehavioral abnormalities by WT-200 water maze.Rotenone administration increased the MDA levels and significantly decreased the activities of SOD, GSH-Px and CAT. However, lycopene administration to the rotenone treated animals increased the activities of SOD, GSH-Px and CAT when compared to rotenone treated animals in substantia nigra and right striatum. The cognitive and motor deficits in rotenone administered animals, which were reversed on lycopene treatment. Along with this, the number of TH decreased, alpha-SYN increased and LC3-B positive neurons increased in rotenone administered animals, which were reversed on lycopene treatment.Collectively, these observations provide an evidence for beneficial effect of lycopene supplementation in rotenone-induced PD and suggest therapeutic potential in neurodegenerative diseases involving accentuated oxidative stress.

To determine mechanisms of cardioprotection induced by combination angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) with subthreshold preconditioning after activation of mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium (mitoK(ATP)) channel.The Langendorff model of isolated rat heart was used. The time of the onset of uncoupling, the activities of sarcolemmal Na+/K+ -ATPase and Ca2+/Mg2+ -ATPase were measured.The subthreshold preconditioning (2 min of ischemia and 10 min reperfusion) or captopril (an ACEI) alone did not protect hearts against injury of sustained ischemia. However combination captopril with subthreshold preconditioning increased LVDP. Pretreatment hearts with mitoK(ATP) channel inhibitor 5-HD abolished the protection effect. Combination captopril with subthreshold preconditioning delayed the onset of uncoupling, and enhanced the activities of sarcolemmal Na+/K+ ATPase and Ca2+/Mg2+ -ATPase in ischemia/reperfusion hearts. But 5-HD cancelled these cardioprotection effects.Combination ACEI with subthreshold preconditioning delays the onset of cellular uncoupling induced by acute ischemia, and promotes the stability of sarcolemmal ion channels, in which activation of the mitoK(ATP) channels may be involved.
