To use RTU in substation upgrading as the communication gateway between the devices with different communication protocols is proposed. The modified protocol, old RTU data transfer and parallel transmission RTU retrofitting schemes are compared and the parallel transition scheme is selected. In its first stage, data are exchanged between new and old RTUs and integrated with the locally sampled data as the overall substation data being sent upward respectively by new and old RTUs through different channels. In its second stage, after the reliable RTU communication and correct channel data are confirmed, only the data of old RTU are sent to new RTU and all channels are switched to new RTU. Field test shows that, both new and old RTUs operate steadily in two stages and the data uploading time meets the requirement of related codes. Source
