In order to provide simulation boundary condition parameters and to improve the modeling accuracy of the processes in a under-development diesel engine, in which measurements of those parameters are not possible, systematic benchmarking tests are conducted, with regard to the performance, combustion processe and emission characteristics of four state-of-the-art high speed diesel engines. Lots of data are collected and intensive in-depth analysis is carried out of the inner relationships between performance vs. design and operational parameters. Results indicate that the coherent relationships between combustion characteristics, i.e., combustion efficiency, combustion duration, rate of heat release curve shape factor (Vibe index), etc. and operational parameters, i.e. engine speed, load, relative AFR, EGR rate, etc. can be obtained for different operational points of the same engine and even for different engines, and their simplified models can then be established. Those general trends and models could be utilized to provide boundary condition parameters and guiding directions for the engine performance optimization process. ©, 2015, Tianjin University.
