The SiCnw/SiC (Silicon Carbide Nanowires/Silicon Carbide) coating was deposited on the surface of mid-density carbon/carbon composites (C/C composites) by chemical vapor deposition. The coating deposition and its anti-oxidant properties were studied for the C/C composites of mid-density with catalyst (Cat.). The results show that during preparing SiCnw layer in mid-density matrix by Cat., the deposition efficiency is improved, meanwhile, the growth of crack is also restrained. Therefore, the oxidation resistant of SiC coating with SiCnw layer is improved in the air at 1200 ℃. Since the mass loss of SiCnw/SiC coating is 1.34%, which is lower than that of SiC coating (8.67%) after oxidation for 10 h at 1500 ℃ in air. © 2015, Central South University. All right reserved.

The silicon carbide whiskers were deposited on C/C composites by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) with methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) as the precursor. The effects of dilute gas flow, catalyst and deposition temperature on the growth of silicon carbide whiskers were investigated. The results show that silicon carbide whiskers (SiC w) with high length-diameter ratio are obtained when there is catalyst, but cosh-like or globular-like silicon carbides are got without catalyst, and with the increase of deposition temperature or the dilute gas flow, the yield of SiC w firstly increases and then decreases, and the highest yield and high quality of silicon carbide whiskers are obtained under the conditions as: deposition temperature of 1100°C and flow of carry gas and dilute gas both for 100 mL/min.

The in-situ SiCw (silicon carbide whiskers) and SiC coating were deposited on the surface of carbon/carbon composites by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) as precursor. The effect of SiCw on the microstructure, texture and mechanic properties of SiC coating was investigated. The results show that well-rounded and fine equiaxial-like SiC particles are promptly formed, the crack width and orientation in the coating are changed, and the texture is adjusted; meanwhile, the hardness of inner-coating of SiC is lower than that of the outer and the lower hardness and lesser elastic modulus of the coating are caused by a great number of cavities in the in-situ SiCw area.
