Aroma component proportion and their differences among enriched, clear, and intermediate in flue-cured tobacco were studied with 84 leaf samples (C3F) from main tobacco planting regions in 2009. Results showed that significant or extremely significant differences existed in some aroma components proportion among aroma styles. In general, clear aroma tobacco had significantly higher proportion of Maillard reaction products, and significant or extremely significant lower proportion of Neophytadiene than enriched and intermediate aroma style tobacco. Intermediate aroma tobacco contained extremely significant lower proportion of Phenylalanine products and Cemdrenoid products than enriched and clear aroma tobacco. Source

Harmful components in cigarette smoke from selenium-enriched tobacco leaves were measured and analyzed. These selenium-enriched tobacco leaves were either naturally grown in field or through spiking, or through pot experiment. Results indicated that: (1) Using natural selenium-enriched burley tobacco as raw material reduced B(a)P, TSNA, and NH3 delivery, while natural grown selenium-enriched flue-cured tobacco leaves reduced B(a)P, HCN and crotonic aldehyde delivery. (2) Adding organic selenium at 10 μg·cig-1 or inorganic selenium at 2 μg·cig-1 in cigarette blend reduced B(a)P, NNK, NNN, NAB, HCN and NH3 delivery. (3) Fertilizing exogenous selenium during agricultural process resulted in reduced yield of phenol, crotonic aldehyde, HCN, NH3, but increased yield of CO and NNK. In summary, adding selenium can be considered as a positive measure to reduce harmful effect of cigarette smoke. Source

Effects of decayed straw manure on microbe and enzyme activities in tobacco root zone soil were studied by comparing with chemical fertilizer. Soil samples were analyzed in different growth periods. Five types of microbes and four types of enzyme activities were detected. Results showed that decayed straw manure significantly increased activities of soil phosphatase and urease, and improved conversion and absorption of phosphorus and nitrogen. Decayed straw manure increased the number of soil bacteria, actinomyces, nitrifying bacteria, amonifying bacteria and soil microorganisms while the number of fungi and invertase and peroxidase activity were less affected. Results also showed that decayed straw manure could increase soil enzyme activity and the number of soil microbes, and thus soil biological activity. Source
