Paper-based sensor is a new alternative technology to develop a portable, low-cost, and rapid analysis system in environmental chemistry. In this study, ion imprinted polymers (IIPs) using cadmium ions as the template were directly grafted on the surface of low-cost print paper based on the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. It can be applied as a recognition element to selectively capture the target ions in the complex samples. The maximum adsorption capacity of IIPs composites was 155.2 mg g–1 and the imprinted factor was more than 3.0. Then, IIPs-paper platform could be also applied as a detection element for highly selective and sensitive detection of Cd(II) ions without complex sample pretreatment and expensive instrument, due to the selective recognition, formation of dithizone-cadmium complexes and light transmission ability. Under the optimized condition, the linear range was changed from 1 to 100 ng mL–1 and the limit of detection was 0.4 ng mL–1. The results were in good agreement with the classic ICP-MS method. Furthermore, the proposed method can also be developed for detection of other heavy metals by designing of new IIPs. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

A simple and effective approach is presented to fabricate fluorescent and magnetic dual-responsive molecularly imprinted polymers for selective recognition of moxidectin. Magnetic gelatin was prepared to provide not only easy magnetic separation, but also significant amino functionalities, allowing surface modification with fluorescein isothiocyanate isomer I and acrylic acid (AA). Based on the double bond provided by AA, molecularly imprinted polymers could be directly coated onto the surface of modified magnetic gelatin. The dual-responsive imprinting polymers feature a high adsorption capacity (87.1 mg g−1), selective fluorescence response toward moxidectin (imprinting factor = 3.6), rapid magnetic separation, and good reproducibility. Subsequently, the dual-responsive composites were successfully applied as sorbents for selective determination of moxidectin. Upon optimization, a linear range of 10–1000 ng mL−1 and a detection limit of 6 ng mL−1 were achieved. The results agree well with those obtained by the classic HPLC–FLD method (r = 0.9935). This developed strategy may find its potential application in rapid, simple, sensitive, and selective determinations of target molecules in complex samples. © 2017, Iranian Chemical Society.

Molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MISPE) combined with HPLC were used to detect trace 17β-estradiol (E2) in different dairy and meat samples. E2 imprinted mono-dispersed microspheres prepared by modified precipitation polymerisation method were used as MISPE sorbents. Under optimum MISPE and HPLC conditions, trace (0.116-0.461 nmol kg -1) E2 in different dairy and meat samples can be detected accurately using UV detector when large amount of sample (500 g) was analysed. Recoveries of E2 from spiked (0.1-5 nmol kg -1) milk, yogurt, beef, pork and chicken were higher than 74.18%, 71.92%, 67.21%, 64.20% and 65.93%, respectively with RSDs less than 8.38%. MISPE can enrich E2 selectively, which is helpful to have better HPLC separation and higher recoveries than C18 SPE. MISPE combined with HPLC-UV are reliable methods to determine trace E2 in dairy and meat samples with high accuracy and repeatability. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Due to the special performance of " dual nature" and synthetic flexibility, ionic liquids (ILs) have been an attractive research subject of stationary phases for gas chromatography (GC). In this work, a novel ionic liquid (IL) bonded polysiloxane ([PSOMIM][NTf2]) with anion of bis-trifluoromethanesulfonylimide (NTf2 -) was synthesized, and another one with chloride anion ([PSOMIM][Cl]) was also prepared for the purpose of comparison. The thermo-stability of the product was evaluated by thermogravimetric (TG) test and the result indicated that [PSOMIM][NTf2] did not decompose slightly until 380°C. Then the solvation behaviors of the ILs were characterized using solvation parameter model. Subsequently, [PSOMIM][NTf2] and [PSOMIM][Cl] were used as stationary phases to prepare capillary columns for GC, respectively. The column efficiency of [PSOMIM][NTf2] column was 4776plates/m (k=3.64±0.08, naphthalene), and that of the other one was 3170plates/m (k=2.84±0.11, naphthalene). The selectivity of the novel stationary phases for analytes, including Grob reagent, aromatic positional isomers was further evaluated. Furthermore, the chromatograms of n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on [PSOMIM][NTf2] column were compared with that on [PSOMIM][Cl] column. [PSOMIM][NTf2] stationary phase also exerted good selectivity for fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and aromatic amines. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

β-Cyclodextrins/acrylic acid modified magnetic gelatin was prepared and then employed as the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) sorbent for extraction of moxidectin in milk samples. Due to the rigidity of hydrophobic cavity of β-cyclodextrins and carboxyl groups of acrylic acid, magnetic composites are prepared to form a complex with target molecules through various kinds of chemical reactions and then showed excellent extraction performance. This method exhibits the advantages of simplicity of implementation, short extraction time (5 min), low solvent consumption, and high extraction efficiency. A rapid, simple, and effective method for the analysis of moxidectin in milk samples was established by MSPE coupled with liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection. The limit of detection was 0.1 ng·mL-1 and the recoveries from milk samples were in the range of 93.8%-112.5%. The relative standard deviation was not higher than 6.4%. In conclusion, magnetic solid-phase extraction is a simple and robust preconcentration technique that can be coupled to other analytical methods for the quantitative determination of target molecules in complex samples. © 2016 Yinzhu Shang et al.

Sex ratio, fresh weight and nutrient contents were examined at five developmental stages of alates in the subterranean termite Reticulitermes chinensis Snyder, including sixth-instar nymphs, callow alates, dark alates, flying alates and dealates. The results showed that the sex ratio of callow alates and dark alates was highly female biased, but there were no significant differences in the percentage of females and males at sixth-instar nymphs, flying alates, and dealates. The fresh weights of alates declined with the developmental stages, suggesting a dynamic process in which the termites continue to shrink and harden. Meanwhile, the weights of female alates were significantly higher than weights of male alates in all five stages. There were no significant differences in the protein titers of the five developmental stages of alates. Flying alates were observed to have the highest triglyceride level, but a low glucose titer. This suggested that the main energy for flight of alates is provided by the breakdown of triglyceride reserves. Alates regardless of developmental stages, workers and soldiers had no significant differences in the cholesterol titers for the two extraction methods. Interestingly, there was a significantly negative linear correlation between the titer of glucose and the titer of triglyceride in both female alates and male alates during the five developmental stages, suggesting that the indirect mutual transformation between glucose and triglyceride might occur in the energy metabolism of all alates in R. chinensis. © 2014, International Union for the Study of Social Insects (IUSSI).

Hydrophilic molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were prepared using tetracycline as template, methacrylic acid as monomer and glycidilmethacrylate as pro-hydrophilic co-monomer. Compared with common MIPs, the imprinting effect and adsorption amounts of hydrophilic MIPs for tetracycline (TC) were greatly improved in water media. Furthermore, the electrochemical sensor fabricated by modifying hydrophilic MIPs on glassy carbon electrode was developed for the determination of TC in foodstuff samples. © 2010 Peng Wang.
