Background & objectives: Artemisinin was first extracted from the herb Artemisia annua which has been used for many centuries in Chinese traditional medicine as a treatment for fever and malaria. It has been given the 2011 Lasker-DeBakey clinical medical research award. In this paper, knowledge map of artemisinin research was drawn to provide some information for global researchers interested in artemisinin and its relevant references. Methods: In this work, bibliometric analysis and knowledge visualization technology were applied to evaluate global scientific production and developing trend of artemisinin research through Science Citation Index (SCI) papers and Medline papers with online version published as following aspects: publication outputs, subject categories, journals, countries, international collaboration, citations, authorship and co-authorship, author key words and co-words analysis. The Thomson Data Analyzer (TDA), Netdraw and Aureka software were employed to analyze the SCI as well as Medline papers data for knowledge mapping. Results: Global literature of artemisinin research has increased rapidly over the past 30 years and has boosted in recent years. Seen from the statistical study in many aspects, Pharmacology & Pharmacy, and Chemistry are still the main subjects of artemisinin research with parasitology and tropical medicine increasing quickly. Malaria Journal and American Journal of Tropical Medicine are top productive journals both in SCI and Medline databases. Quantity and quality of papers in US are in a leading position, although papers quantity and active degree in developing countries such as P.R. China, Thailand and India are relatively high, the quality of papers from these countries needs to be improved. New emerging key words and co-words remind us that mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, artemisinin-based alternatives, etc. are the future trends of artemisinin research. Conclusion: Through bibliometric analysis the development trends of artemisinin research are predicted. With further development of artemisinin research, it is presumed that scientists might concentrate mainly on the synthesis of new compounds with activity, action mechanism, new artemisinin-based combination therapy regimens, etc. Source

Abstract In order to investigate the effect of low-P stress on iron and manganese absorption and accumulation by rice genotypes at tillering, booting and maturity stages, pot experiments were conducted using low-P tolerance rice genotypes 508, 580, 99011, 99112 and low-P sensitive rice genotypes 99012 and 99056. The result showed that the difference relative Fe and Mn contents in stems and leaves between the low-P tolerance rice genotypes and low-P sensitive rice genotypes was not obvious. The low-P stress decreased the Fe contents in stems and leaves at the tillering stage of the low-P sensitive rice genotypes larger than those of the low-P tolerance rice genotypes. At the booting stage, the Fe content of only 99056 significantly decreased, while the Mn content significantly decreased except 99112 under the low-P stress. At the maturity stage, the variations in Fe and Mn contents in rice stems and leaves were seen more complicated than those at early growth stages. The Fe and Mn contents in seeds of the low-P tolerance rice genotypes significantly decreased, but those of the low-P sensitive rice genotypes increased. The low-P stress largely decreased the Fe and Mn accumulations in all the rice genotypes, and the accumulations of Fe and Mn were much higher in the P-tolerance rice genotypes than in the P-sensitive rice genotypes at the early growth stages. The difference in accumulations of Fe and Mn in the two rice genotypes declined, but the relative accumulations of Fe and Mn in the P-tolerance rice genotypes increased at the late growth stage. We have synthesized a novel ambipolar membrane for the simple, rapid, and simultaneous extraction of key nutrients from soil. The membrane was made by adding an anion- and a cation-exchange resin to a polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel in the presence of glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent. The synthetic membrane was efficient in adsorbing (extracting) NO - 3, PO 3- 3, K +, Ca 2+, and Mg 2+ ions from soil simultaneously. The ion-adsorption capacity of the membrane was related to the soil nutrient status, duration of membrane-soil contact, and soil water content. The importance of these factors followed the order: soil nutrient status > contact time > soil water content. Adsorption by the membrane of NO - 3 and Mg 2+ ions from soil leveled off after 48 h of membrane-soil contact but uptake of Ca 2+, PO 3- 3, and K + ions required a longer contact time for equilibrium to be established. When the soil water content exceeds 55% w/w, this factor ceased to influence ion adsorption by the ambipolar-resin membrane. The synthetic membrane is potentially useful for the in situ assessment of the nutrient requirement of certain crops at a given point in time. © 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.
