Apart from the long distance and complex geological settings, the crossing strata are mostly powder sand bodies or fine sand bodies in the Jiangyin Yangtze River Crossing Project 3300 m HDD. This brings about great trouble in the recycling of drilling mud. In view of this, a number of comparative experiments were carried out between the traditional and new centrifugal pump-used drilling mud recycling systems. Most of the particles in drilling cuttings were less than 75 μm in size so the harmful solids in the mud could not be separated by the tradition drilling recycling system with the screen mesh size of 125 μm at the minimum. If only by increasing the mesh numbers, the drilling mud recycling efficiency would be reduced. However, this new centrifugal pump-used new drilling mud recycling system needs neither the increase of drilling fluid volume nor additional treating agents. As a result, the drilling fluid cost is thus cut down and the negative impact on the drilling mud performance is also limited, which will be helpful for the normal drilling in this project. Moreover, according to the experimental studies and actual application, we also put forward the following suggestions for the adaptability of this new centrifugal pump-used drilling mud recycling system. First, unlike the traditional one, this recycling system will not be blindly applied to the crossing of such moderate and coarse sand bodies. Second, medium-speed centrifuge pumps are adaptable for the powder and fine sands strata, while high-speed centrifuge pumps better for clay strata.

The success or failure of the pilot hole drilling is fundamentally important for the Jiangyin Yangtze River Crossing Project 3300 m HDD, a new world record in this field. At the pilot hole drilling stage, a mechanical analysis on the drill pipes is quite necessary for engineers to determine the stress on the pipes and judge if the drill tool assembly will meet the drilling requirement. In view of this, based on the traditional soft drill string model and the latest ABIS model, an HDD pilot hole drilling pipe mechanical analysis software was developed with 3D image display. The calculated wellhead thrust and wellhead torque by this new software were almost in agreement with those by the commonly used Ridgewood Software (RS). Also this software was applied to a simulation process of an HDD project, and the calculated results were compared with the actual measuring results. The results showed that the newly developed software can not only predict the mechanical status of drill pipes but also through three dimensional images visually display the transformation and stress distribution of drill pipes in the pilot hole drilling. The successful development and application of this software provides a robust technical support for the drill tool assembly used for the pilot hole drilling in this project, and its domestication lays a foundation for the design and large-scale engineering application of pilot holes in HDD projects.

The Jiangyin Yangtze River Crossing Project sets up a record with the length of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) of 3300 meters in the world. Many technical difficulties have been inevitably encountered in pilot hole docking, reaming torque, property requirement and recovery processing of drilling fluids, and pull-back resistance, and so on. In view of this, first at the pilot hole drilling stage, a reasonable drill tool assembly was chosen, and a new type drill pipe Φ193.7 mm (S-135) with a high strength was applied along with fully guided cable and rotating magnate docking technologies. Then at the reaming stage, a newly-designed drill pipe Φ168.3 mm (V-150) was adopted along with the optimized reamers and the improved hydraulic parameters to successfully reduce the reaming torque and significantly improve the reaming efficiency. And at the pullback stage, a specific ground anchor was designed for such large-tonnage pullback strength, high-performance anti-friction lubricants were carried by the coaxial distribution delivery tube, and glass fiber reinforced plastics were also utilized for the pipeline coating. Finally, the drilling fluid formula was optimally selected to ensure the hole stability and flowback of drilling cuttings, and a centrifugal was used to recycle the drilling mud to ensure the mud performance. The above technical innovation not only ensured the smooth and successful completion of this HDD project, but broke many records in this respect.
